Getting mpc2000xl to play midi data from sequencer on PC

Right here go's

I'm using Sonar 1.0 a edirol usb midi interface and a mpc 2000xl plus all the the right leads.

I've got the pads to play on the piano roll of sonar.
I can maually write a midi track in sonar and have it trigger pads on the mpc.
I can switch over to device1 on the mpc and can record the midi data of me playing the pads in realtime into sonar.
But when I switch back to drum 1 I cannot play the data back from sonar (Sonar monitor show it oputputing midi and the mpc's moitor show some kind of midi signal coming in)and can not longer trigger the mpc from the piano roll as I could b4 recording.
But here's the weird bit if i switch the mpc off then on again and reload the drum program I can play the midi data I recorded into sonar previouly.
HOW do I get it so i can record and playback without having to turn the mpc on and off ? HELP what am i doing wrong

try switching it to drum: off instead of drum 1 on the mpc mail screen.

sounds like you have the XL.
what i was trying to get at is something is different than its default state. all you should have to set to get the midi out of the mpc into the computer is setting it to midi: and a midi out/channel, setting it back to it's default state (drum:off on the original nonXL) should be all you are accomplishing by rebooting the mpc.

also worth pointing out is that you can simply move your .mid file over via a floppy. open it in sonar and hit play and it should play the sequence back via midi on the mpc. that is how i go about tranferring a basic beat idea over to the computer.

yeah i've transfered stuff via floppy that works fine but i want to be able to record extra data live over the top. I'm close to that but this problem with the settings is holding me back
when i load my pgm the mpc200xl is set to
s:drum1: off (kitname)

then i record and switch to
s:drum1: 1A-Device01
then back to
s:drum1: off (kitname)
and try to play the recorded midi but no sound come out even though data seem to be being received. are there any other setting that would be changed when switching from drum1: off to 1A-Device ??
Channels etc

there shouldnt be.
maybe try switching to the next unused sequence.
maybe the track is muted or another is soloed from transferring the stuff in.
i would really suggest if you are going to go the softsequencer route, that you use something other than the mpc for the sound source. i use battery, and in reason dr rex players and redrum. using the computer as a sound source makes the whole assigning sounds, editing and organizing them ALOT easier. plus you dont have to switch anything back and forth, just set the mpc up to send midi and overdub away.

I'm dancing around living to my midi signal playing the sound on my mpc. it was the soft thru setting in the midi output menu screen
when recording it must be
soft thru:off
if you want playback yo must set it to as track easy i suppose

Ok, basically I'm using cubase sx and some softsyths and what Im trynig to do is play some of these sounds from cubase onto my track on the mpc (2k xl).... Im pretty sure Ive got things hooked up properly, cos when I go into step editor on mpc it looks as though there is stuff recorded, but it doesnt play back anything...Please could someone give me a step by step guide on how to hook things up properly...

this is how I have things set up:

midi controller keyboard into pc by usb
midi out from keyboard into midi in A
midi out from pc into midi in B
midi out from mpc into midi in on PC

On sequencer: S:MIDI : 1A-Device01

Do I need to actually sample the sounds from the softsynths onto mpc before playing, or does it just receive the sound info directly through keyboard?.... Please somebody help me, as its starting to depress me now

^^ I've figured it out now........ just incase anyone else has my sam config, what I needed to do in cubase was set midi in as my soundcard midi in (I had it set as usb keyboard), and midi out as softsynth

actually, I have one more quick question.... how do I use more that one sound from the vst in my sequence?..... Basically, I'm able to record a partuicualr sound on a track (e.g track 1)... but when I go to record a different sound on track 2, it simply changes track 1 to the same sound

depends on the vsti. for example kontakt lets you set up multiple 'instruments' for some vsti's you would have to load another instance of the vsti and select that patch on the new one seperately.

open a new vst of the same instrument and assign it to track 2. it should say somthing like 'name of vsti (2)'

Another related and helpfull setting is `PADS TO INTERNAL DRUM: OFF`. This is equivalent to local off of synthesizers where you can send midi data from the MPC's pads, record it in an outboard sequencer and eacho back to the internal MPC samples.
