I have been thinking alot about this topic recently and would like other people thoughts. I have been listening to early to a lot of Atmosphere, Headshots tapes and early L7 & Esoteric a lot of mid to late nighties boom bap stuff. What I have noticed is the drums really make your neck snap, this is either due to Programming the kicks and snares with the quantise off or adding swing after. If anyone has any insight into this topic I would really like to hear from you.

Im sure alot of people know this but is there any chance people can be more specific?. To also be specific I mean in regards what amount of swing, 16 or 32, before or after...etc?. I know there is set blueprint for this but id be happy with ball park.

Its about as important as what color toilet paper you use to wipe your ass. As long you left the room funky, no one cares. And if you say you use lemony scented toilet paper, I don't think anyone is gonna smell your ass and say "yeah, thats that lemon fresh smell". Just get creative and **** tom dick and harry.

^^ Erm... ok!

I have my 2500 set up with about 65% swing and 30% strength, and that seems to catch the wayward notes and pull them into a nice groove.

It could be psychological, but I can't seem to nail the same swing with Maschine. :?

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing ;)

BUT. Just some things you should think about.

1. Swing is nothing more than: shifting (some) notes in timing
2. If 1 is true than the way you trim your sample can have much influence on the rhytmic feel and so it will influence how the swing setting will work (or if its even neccessery)
3. Cutting samples in for example 8th notes rather than single hits can keep the rhythmic feel (swing) of the original or give other nice rhythmic feels (depends on the tempo you set and/or the playback speed of the samples)

You'll find your own way of how to add the kind of swing you want to your drumtracks.
Experiment by using different types of quantize and swing values. Shift some notes manualy. Play some parts without quantizing. Leave more air in front of the drumsample so it will play a little bit late. It's like the Ill-Green said. As long as it's funky.

Old Atmosphere beats have zero swing, and Ant didn't really bother with messing with the velocity either. Or to be more precise, maybe he used some swing setting on his ASR, but no quantize? Hell no.

I agree. And I don't think that 7L and Esoteric used swing either. I only have Dangerous connection, the drums hit hard on that LP but the drums programming is pretty simple.

ant is a weird producer. i really like his newer stuff but his earlier stuff bothered me for some reason. his drums sounded mad clumsy...inelegant. i definitely still listened because it was clear he had style but man

so yeah regarding the question....listen to your melody, they willl tell you what kind of swing to apply if any.

premo has some stiff drums some of them seem to have no bounce same with marco polo, but some of they beat have alot of bounce.

the key is in sound selection and how u bounce the sample over the drums
