disk read error.....

after i formated my zip disks, i try to load sounds using mpc editor, and when i put the disk in, it says 'please insert disk' so its basicly not recognizing that there is a disk and when i try to export a program from mpc editor, it says, 'error, report to midicase #52'.....but when i load that same disk in the mpc, it reads it, but the file type says 'PC' when before or on my other disks, it said 'mpc2000xl' ....what is the deal here....any help pretty please yall

right now my usb zip is hooked up to win2000, but i got another computer with XP...... any advise

Try using Iomega's Disk tools to format the disk prior to use.

If that does not work post here again (in the same thread).

should i try the disk tools on the comp with XP or my comp with win2000? im not always gonna have the one with XP though, so the drive will be hooked up to my comp with win2000......

on the mpc2kxl, (wich is what i got) when i load a disk in my external zip, where it says file type, (below device) does it matter what it says. some disks say PC and some say MPC2000XL....and i even got a couple that show like 5 or 6 question marks......this is a really stoopid problem to have....but it is a problem....i really need some help here fellas...

i did the iomegaware.....but my problem now is this..
i format one disk, once that disk has been succesfully formated, i take the disk out then put it back in the same drive hooked to the comp, and i try to open it, and when i right click to open the disk, it is tellin me to insert a disk in the drive.....why is a freshly formated disk not being read?? i have other disks that CAN be read on the same drive hooked to the comp....what am i doing wrong... i know im dumb, but this is frustrating

I'm no zip expert but could it be that the disk in question is broke?

no because when i load it to the drive hookd up to the mpc, it is recognized by the mpc, which then brings me to my next problem which is; once i load the disk (which is empty cuz i cant load anything from my comp) to the mpc, on the screen where it says 'type', it usually says MPC2000XL: but instead has 5 or 6 question marks.....or on other disks it will say PC next to type. what the dillililly

You formatted this disk in your MPC didn't you? Format via computer
FAT, 8.3 format. I have done this on my XP and I've had no probs reading it in my XL.

Place the ZIP in your pc. Right click on the zip drive icon and choose format. Change the dropdown menu to FAT and fomat the zip. Now the MPC should be able to read THAT disc also. I have done this AND the iomegaware thing.

(which are VERY picky so I use the iomegaware and they work fine)..

nothing is working....i did what u say, and now when i try to open to see what is on the disk, it freezes and says 'my comp not responding'
i need to know if it matters that on my mpc, when on the load screen, where it says type, some of my disks say PC, and the only 2 that even barely work say mpc2000xl..... sumtimes when i try to save a seq or pgm, it wont let me...it will either say disk read error, or i will hear a click or two in the external zip drive....

Your disks that say "PC" were formatted on the PC or you bought them preformatted for PC and you used them str8 out the package is my guess.

The 2 disk that "barely work" and they say "MPC2000XL" were prolly formatted on the XL is my other guess.


The click you hear might be the oncoming "click of death".

I suspect Cheech is right, bad disk. Your assumption that the MPC can read the disk so it must be OK is not right. MPC's and PC's read different sectors of disks and the PC is reading a bad section that the MPC does not see.

The clicks are sometimes related to the bad sectors. The Zip is trying to read through them, but can't, so it bangs itself against the head park committing suicide.
