How to install SMPTE board? And slider

interesting thread, my classic came with the smpte board installed already (as well as the eb16 and 8 outs...) but my xl had the socket with no chip. At the time of first discovering that I wondered what it was for.

I wonder if the chip installed on the classic's smpte PCB is the same chip as the one that gets placed in the xl.

It looks to be a pretty generic chip....not even akai made.

From the datasheet:

The ICS2008B, SMPTE Time Code Receiver / Generator
chip, is a VLSI device designed in a low power CMOS
process. This device provides the timing coordination for
Multimedia sight and sound events. Although it is aimed at
a PC Multimedia environment, the ICS2008B is easily
integrated into products requiring SMPTE time code
generation and/or reception in LTC (Longitudinal Time
Code) and/or VITC (Vertical Interval Time Code) formats
and MTC (MIDI Time Code) translation.

Nice find finding it for so cheap. With an Akai box wrapped around it it's 6 times as expensive.

I have seen the smpte expansion often go for around 25 bucks.

Thank you nogginj and all the others, I've ordered it, I'll let you know if it works or not, just will take a lot to arrive because I'm in europe and the shipping option is quite bad.... costs more for shipping than the component itself

It is.
I have both and they have the same chip.
If you have the 2k classic board, the chip can be prised out and placed directly into the 2000XLs slot.

In fact my 2000XL chip cost me £99 back in the day.
The 2000 classic board later cost me only £35.
Could be a way to save money.

Having said that, what with MIDI sync and that, I rarely use SMPTE anymore.

My recorder has midi sync which means i don't need sacrifice a track for a smpte stripe.

hi, first post (hi). i bought the $10 smpte chip and it seems to work fine. i can hear the sync tone coming out of the smpte out when i hit play. thats really all i have to go on. ive been trying to smpte sync to a roland mc-202; has anyone tried this and had any luck?

ICS2008AV SMPTE chips from eBay, $15 each plus shipping...
