Help - LCD Screen keeps going F**ked Up

My LCD from time to time keeps doing this:-




Going between Mode & Main a few times sometimes puts it back right. And the problem is quite intermittent.

Do you think its a screen problem, a CPU board problem or something like the mains voltage may be going a bit too low from time to time.
I'm kind of hoping that if it is a hardware issue then its the screen because thats cheaper to fix. But, I don't want to buy a new screen & find out that it was the main board's chips were going wrong all along.

What do you think. Your input will be very appreciated.

Its JJ 5.56 - I like the 4 Layers.

The screen thing is like the old school analog tv when it didn't sync properly. Its as though it doesn't know where the start of the screen is. Also when the problem happens it skews in exactly the same place and a few random pixels are added or removed here and there.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any control chips on the LCD board. Does the CPU board say to the screen write an letter 'A' here and number '2' there and the LCD board then sorts that out. Or if the CPU is going 'this pixel on, that pixel off' and the LCD board is dumb in which case the CPU board might be at fault (which I hope isn't the case coz thats expensive & I'd have to add JJOS to the price..... aaaaaarghhh!!! ).

I'm not getting much feedback here, so it must be quite a rare problem.

have you opened the MPC up yet? it may be something as simple as a loosely connected cable that needs to be pushed into place properly...

I thought that too. When it first started I sprayed the LCD connector on the CPU board with Servisol,which is like WD40. That seemed to stop it happening for a while. Next time it happened I did it again but the screen kept coming back like this from time to time.

It doesn't seem to happen too much at the mo, just occasionally every 2 or 3 days for a few minutes. Sometimes turning the MPC off helps, but a bit scared its going to get worse.

I've been meaning to get Deoxit for a while for my patchbay, so may get that and see if that helps any better. Also, just tried Akai's support page, never done that before, wonder what they are like with out-of-warranty support.

When I first posted I thought I'd get a reply of 'I had that & just did this' but it seems more of a gnarly problem than that. But your responses have prompted me to think about it all in more depth. Cheers for that.

well, it seems unlikely that it would happen because of the OS if no one else has been having this issue, so it's got to be hardware related... however, it may not be the actual LCD screen that has the issue... it could be something else that is making some weird contact and sending the MPC into a confused state... i know for fact that bent pins in the flash card drive or loose RAM can make the screen do some crazy things for example... it may be something along those lines...

there's a thought. I'll try reseating the RAM and go through all the connectors when I open the box next. Your idea makes sense, even though some of theses things may not have anything to do with the screen, they may still have an effect on voltages & clocking.

Ironically, since starting this post the LCD's been behaving itself.
