Using MPC500 to record rehearsals

I'm considering purchasing an MPC500 to play some samples for our band. The bell sound in ac/dc's hell's bells, etc.

What I'm wondering is... could I hook up some mic's and record our rehearsals to listen to later?

Is the mpc-500 as good as say a handheld tascam, roland, etc. recorder?

Can't say its not possible but even with the 128MB RAM installed, all you're getting is 20 minutes of Recording time. The Tascam DP008 is a little beast and much easier to use than Roland.

yeah, i know there's a 20min limit with the expansion board..

but i could record and store each song separately, or every 3-4 songs.

but is the sound quality good enough to review later? does it come close to a standalone recorder?

The sound quality is good enough if you want 16 bit audio, it is a sampler remember.

It is not designed to rival standalone recorders by any means, it is what it is...

i was playing in a band some years ago.
we used such an old thing from the last century called tapedeck to record our performances
