the key is in sound selection and how u bounce the sample over the drums

exactly,

think about it. if you shift your drums 62% and your instruments shift with it, you aint shift nothing. point is, its how the samples ride on top of the drums.

Swing doesn't shift every note, so I don't know where you're coming from with this?

not exactly what i meant. just saying, its all relative. if you shift all the drums, you really aint shifted them, if you shift each track differantly, you might get somewhere. but same goes with samples too. so how do you know where to shift your drums? you gotta hear with the sample cause what works in one situation may not work in another depending on the sample and how its chopped.

its got to work with the sample. i can have a straight quantized 1/8th note drum pattern with no swing or shifting.........but then lay my sample over top and it will have bounce depending on where i place the sample. see what im saying?

i'm not saying dont shift or mess with the drums.....im just saying alot has to do with the sample and how the drums work with the sample.

you can spend hours on drums, shifting, quantizing, step editing, getting a nice groovey pattern..........but then go in and lay your sample directly on top quantized relative to the drum pattern and it sounds like shit..........when someone else could have freestyled the drums with them all sloppy and gotten the boom bap feel.

Good Post! There is no "formula" for it. You just gotta get it right.

my 2 cents... turn the swing off!!! turn the quntize off!!! if you can hear it you can play and if you cant well... give up... lol

i only quatize my snare and only if i want them on 2 and 4

practive playing your mpc it IS an instrument and the best thing is the UNDO button if its not grooving right just scrap it, its just like playing drums you can play the hat straight or you can play it loosely and let it groove remember before sequencers clyde stubblefield had all the funk in his bones right where it should be just gotta let it out...

ive noticed the best head nodders have drums that can stand alone when soloed but then again ive made beats where the groove is sickening but the drums sound off time and loose when played alone its all in the final product but if you want listeners to rock to your stuff the rhythm has gotta be swinging

^^ co-sign it is well worth learning to play without quantise and swing rather then requiring the machine to put the note in the right slot, u need to develop ur own artistic vision of how shit needs to sound and be able to get that idea out in a beat.

It's got a lot to do with how you chop ur samples as well. wether u use single (drum) shots, or take an 8th or even a 1/4 note from a drum break.
You can have ur TC switched on and ur pattern might still sound "off", eventhough the sample starts on time. It depends whats in the sample.
The drummer u sampled might be playing triplets on his high-hats. u chop it, u play it the right way, and suddenly hes playing straight 8th notes... (just did that the other day)
Then you can change the swing by messing with the tempo of the song, (cos obviousley the samples is gonna cut each other off at diffrent parts, If u know what I mean... )

All of this "wisdom" came from artists like ya'll (and me) staying up late, taking sick days from work to work on our craft. There is no easy way to explain or learn it. There is no way to escape the fact that "time" spent is even more important that "$" spent!

velocity plays a role, Mix it with a bit of swing on your drums and then on samples/chop, play them freestyle with no swing, create your OWN "swing" with your chops,
