Princely Drums

Alright,

I'm trying to experiment with this sexy 80's R&B type track for my girl and I'm trying to get that 1984 Prince type vibe. (You know that Beautiful Ones, Adore, Purple Rain, etc. groove)

But I'm concentrating on that BIG, AIRY, REVERBED-up drum sound.

I know The Purple One used the early Linn machines to get that trademark sound. I've been diggin through every Linn kit I have and still can't find anything that remotely like the famous MPLSound.

I know we have some peeps in MN around here that might know a trick or two on how to get that sound but I dunno, my drums just sound so dry...

Any Tips?!?!?

His Royal Purpleness ran the Linn through an Eventide Harmonizer, so try a harmonizer VST if you have one. I think only UAD has an actual Eventide plugin. A chorus plugin could give somewhat similar results, but with either technique I'd be careful on bass drums on kicks. Maschine has an excellent Prince inspired kit, can't recall the name, but it's dead obvious what it is from the title.

Most of the sounds I can get but.. that THICK ASS SNARE!!! I know it's layered with something but DAMN, that sucka cuts though a mix like warm butter!

Try to jack a snare hit or 2 off D.M.S.R. from 1999.

And get the snares off the original Alesis HR-16!!

I dont know the fx units he used but I would try an IR reverb with impulses from the Lexicon 480 on the snare.

Well.... I just realized that the 480L came out in 86 while Purple Rain was made in 84
