Haha, this will probably catck flak cause the 5K seems to be among the most hated machines on the planet, comparable to the LZ 129 Hindenburg. Imo pretty undeserved...

Anyhow, this thread is for cool videos, tips, new tidbits you found and like to share about the MPC 5K.

Yesterday I was scanning YT and last time I checked there weren't many dope 5K videos. I found a couple of new(er) cool(er) vids.

These 2 vids show the potential of the 5K's synth (which isn't weak by an means):

DJ Quik on the 5K:

This 5K looks nasty, but those sample chops are dope:

I think there are still not enough vids that show the 5K's potential and all it has to offer. Maybe I'll do some with my small Lumix' cheesy video mode. Maybe you have some ideas what I could showcase..?

OK, enough 5K-adulation by me. Input is welcome...

Ha, no hate from me... thank you for the links, finally some respect for this machine! I love the 5000 and I'm so happy to record without a computer. Sound is absolut pristine and workflow is so physical.

Im certainly with u man. Love my 5k. Recently been mixing joints right n the box and its the best sounding sh!t. Took it to my djs spot and had him record some cuts into it and my guy played bass into it. Mixed it in the box itself and its soooo dope.

Try running the synth thru a mooger fooger or a preamp to really bring out the raw potential in it. I have run mine thru an analoge factory too. Ill

I even cutomized mine

Plan to do more vids myself.

Ye, everything can be done in and from the 5000 without ever needing a computer during the creation and recording process. But integrating it into a hybrid setup is dope too... the 5K as the center piece that controls the rest of the studio, other synths, samplers and virtual instruments in the DAW.
You're right, the workflow of the 5K is killer!

I haven't mixed/finished a track solely in the 5K yet, but I'm sure it can be done with a methodic approach. There isn't enough horse power for effects for a full live mix, but back in the days people finished tracks on 4-track recorders by means of bouncing. However the 5K has outputs (and inputs) galore unlike any other machine, so hooking it up to analog and digital equipment is a breeze.

Running the 5K's synth through an analog filter eh? Ill! The synth already sounds pretty fat as can be heard in the 2 vids above. The 5K's digital filters sound pretty analog with plenty of resonance and smack.. especially the Model2. The modulation possibilities are nice too.

Man, I saw it when you first posted, but your bumblebee color scheme looks so dope! That's one fine custom 5K!!

Love the 5000, but can't imagine doing extensive arranging with lot's of automation in the 5000.....

Mix to two track relatively simple song sequence nothing too experimental. It comes out more glued together. Also have bounced stems almost like summing to import into logic for more processing but still keeps the parts nice n phat. Options n preferences thats all.

I love the synth too but the high end can be a bit too digital sometimes (but then this is true of the mopho in some instances at the hi end) still love it tho i just i have some synth heavy tracks i did on my sound cloud.

I routed the synth out to my tube preamp to warm it up and out the pre back into the input thru on the 5k... Added a touch of effects (delay, reverb etc) at input thru and tracked out of adat outs into logic. Sounds pretty good imo. This box is so versatile i love it fa real fa real

Im showing the 5k some love.I just ordered one on ebay!!!!!!!!fully maxed and in new condition with 12 months warrantee. It will be my second time.I sold it before and kept the 4k.It was a hard choice but stiff competition.Anyways listening back to my recordings of the first 5k i actually really have a soft spot for the beasty.Love the 4 but kind of a bit tired of its dry raw sound and think that the 5 is more fun to use.Need a change again.Anyway i hope im doing the right thing.Well i got it cheap enuff.I actually cant live without that synth.Havent found it in any other machine and no its not the same as the miniak or the alesis one as ive heard some say.I think ill keep the 4k just in case lol (the 4k is an absolute diamond also.....)

Welcome back dyrad-66 :D Interesting you prefer it's sound over the holy grail and find it's more fun. But don't say it too loud, the inquisition is just around the corner lighting their torches haha.
I compared the Miniak side by side with the 5K's synth and found that the raw engine is essentially the same. But the implementation in the 5K is actually far better with direct acccess via the qlink controls, it's higher polyphony and all the peripherals the 5K offers. Also there's something very special about having such a synth all integrated with a highly advanced sequencer, arpeggiator and resampling possibilities like in the MPC 5K. So I sent the Miniak back.
How much did you pay for the fully maxed 5K at ebay if I may ask?
By dryad-66 Sun Jul 31, 2011 2:41 pm
Cheers Otobot......Ok the miniak.Somebody said that its basically the same as the micron!!and i had one of those and it was different.I hope they bring out a new os so that you can record all the synth parameters.Whats the chance of a new os?anyways i got the machine with dvd burner and max ram,boxed/manuals ect for 720 quid(uk).20 quid postage.Best deal ive seen around.Love the sequencer on these things.Tried the 2500 and was not so impressed.

It's basically the same as the Micron.. or so they say. The presets in the Miniak and Micron make heavy use of their effects sections, so comparing them to the raw uneffected sound of the 5K synth should sound different. Plus Miniak and Micron have a couple of extras.. don't remember which right now.

Woo, congrats on a killer deal man! It's crazy how 2500's generally go for more on fleabay. Must have something to do with the hating the 5K faced. Good for us, I got my 5K for a killer deal too (900 EUR) from a shop incl. 1 year warantee one and a half years ago :)
That'll change once people realize what a beast the 5K really is. The 4K catched much flack too when it came out.

There are rumours about a new OS update for the 5K. On Akai Pro's Twitter they said that's something their engineers are working on right now.

Strange that its got the same synthesis as the micron as its sounds very different to me.I found the micron very bright and the 5k murky like an old hybrid synth.yep, its great that we are not in fashion.Love all the controllers and the large purple screen.Hows the phono input quality for the deck?Cant remember meself.

Put some similar effects on comparable synth patches in the 5K and it should give very similar results. The raw synth engine is really borrowed from Alesis' Ion and Micron lines.
I use the phono input. Some people have dismissed it, but then again those use state of the art phono amps anyway and better turntable systems and super clean records. To me the one in the 5K is good. I wouldn't notice a change with another phono amp since I kinda like to sample dirtier sounding records from my SL-1900 anyways...

Off topic: today I ordered an Elektron Octatrack haha. Don't know if it'll fit my expectations, but it seems to be one deep beast and could complement my setup well. Also plan to use it for live shows in conjunction with my 500.

The phono input is damn good for me. I agree that others probably have better phono amps but im not a dj with super fly decks and mixer etc. So for me the phono is great i use my regular old stanton str8 deck with shure needle (clean) and the 5k phono is perfect.

Hey oto does the elektron have the sidstation emu in it?

It's not here yet, but from what I know the Octatrack doesn't have any kind of synthesis on board. Only different kinds of sampling machines/engines like flex, static and thru machines (more to come), liquid audio (timing/pitch), step sequencer for the tracks and exteriour MIDI and extensive LFO and effect possibilities that provide everything for extreme sample rapeing haha.

The Elektron device you probably meant is the Monomachine.
