Best way to 'remove' background noise?

for example - the Herb Alpert sample on Method Man's Release Yo Delf... whats the best way to single out a horn lead like that from the rest of the original track?

Sample it in stereo, seperate the stereo sample into left and right channel. What side sounds better? Does the horns stand out on one channel more than the other? Maybe run a high pass filter to take the lows out.. that's all they did..

True...sometimes, you get ridiculously lucky

Use a 1band eq and sweep through the frequencies to find the part you don't want and try to reduce it. Also try the stereo to mono trick mentioned above.

yea i've been trying all the eq's on my mixer, but its a Vestax pmc 05 mk iv - scratching mixer not a studio style mixer... dunno how much of a difference that makes. do i need to be looking into some kind of 8-10ch mixer? is this where i can take advantage of my 8 outs?

Don't know what mpc you have.. I've had 3000, 4000, and 2kxl.. what ever machine you have either has a feature where you can split the two channels or you can sample each channel separate. Most scratching mixers have eq bands as well as desk mixers.. the eight out don't make a difference unless you have a mixer or recording interface face such as the digi002 mixer/rack.. you definitely can open up a whole range of new possibilities if you have the eight outs and an interface to plug them into..

yea the vestax has hi/ mid/ and lo filters - i know nothing of 8 channel mixers - a cheapo behringer that would handle the 8outs would give me more eqs/filters to manipulate the sound, right?

that digi 002 looks like the ultimate DAW to mpc connection huh? it fkin better be.. its more than twice what the damn mpc cost when you buy it new with PT

you can pick up the 002 for fairly cheap these days.. don't even **** with behringer shit, you'll regret later on with the money you could've saved... all kinds of alternatives but I like my 002.. that and the fact that it's pretty much guaranteed to be used by a lot of others meaning taking your projects to others can be beneficial in the long run

so just get a used one and don't worry about it not being bundled with PT - just run Reaper? how much should i pay for a used one? prices on ebay are kinda all over the place

I just looked on ebay and craigslist in the Portland area and seen some digi 002 racks for as low as $350 with software to $800 with software. Just keep an eye out and be patient. Plenty of deals to be had pimpin.. You also could run logic with it..

i saw the racks for sale on CL - with the rack version are all the sliders and knobs are just in the DAW i assume? software makes me sad. i'd rather do everything on physical hardware and have the laptop do as little as possible at all times.

one cat on there who wants a nice bass or a decent bass + amp for his console... i wonder if i could just go catch him a badass fish outta the Colombia and he'd be cool with that ....

The rack has complete control over all the virtual sliders.. less hands on but not enough to really make a difference.. Yeah I saw that desk thought about trading my fender bass and amp for half a second but I love my bass too much!
