I always make build around the drums. So with that said I'm "making" the sample fit the texture of my drums.

I've spent months sampling and tuning kicks and snares etc and then making kits with sounds that work well with each other. For me getting the sample to match the drums is a lot easier than making the drums match the sample

I don't have "one" method, really. But mostly it's pretty much like what roxxtar said..
Just recently I started building up my own little drum library, with kicks, snares and hihats and stuff in seperate folders.
They do come in handy when I don't want to interupt the creative flow.
Then I really do just about everything with the drums, effects(compression, eq,..) filters, envelopes, tuning.
So each song gets the drum sounds it needs.
Breaks are also essential to the sound I want.
