Selecting Samples

How many times you guys pick up sample, chop it, start layering it and then you find out that this ain't gonna work or sound ain't right and you just quit and shut down your MPC?

I do this sometimes and it's frustrating. Sometimes I still save the beat and I make it sound the way I like it on other day with new "touch".

<------ Guilty. I hate that sh!t too. The only difference is I never save it, just turn it off. Maybe I should try that approach. It's the worst when you've been putting in mad time to cut and shape everything and then when you try to lay it down it's like something's missing or you get one sequence, but can't seem to tie everything together to make a complete song. And then switching the drums doesn't work, just wack. Mad frusturating. Especially if you had a dope sample.

LoL, what is really depressing is when the nite before, you made a DOPE beat-you swear it's fire. Wake up the next morning, play that joint like, 'this sh!t is terrible wtf was i thinking'? and you spent like 3 1/2 hrs making it.

Few weeks ago I chopped everything up and I was ready to go but nothing comes up.. I was just hitting pads with no sense or idea what to do. I saved the beat.. A week later I fired up the MPC and just started banging with my early done chops. I suddenly got great idea and made a great beat. But that happens only sometimes. Mostly the beat goes straight to the trashcan.

Sometimes the dopeness only happens when you've got those 5 or more different layers interacting. That takes a lot of practice to pull off, and most of us will never master it unfortunately.

I'm with you on this. Layers are where it's at. As far as choosing samples I look for something that strikes my emotions musically. In some situations it may be just a note or two. Once you find something that resonates with you it's far easier to be expressive with the sample you've chosen. I won't stop looking until I find something that I really feel connected to.

Sometimes I'd have a sample that works easily as a two bar loop, but then I'm just not happy with it, because it's just a two bar loop and not more.. I find myself being a lot more creative with samples that are tricky, and really give me a hard time
