The only thing it can't do is record audio to tracks....but most people have daws for that anyways. I promise you, buying a 5k will be a gamble.
I didn't want to post in this thread for obvious reasons, but there's some misinformation in that above post.
The 5K has global program edit, it's called Multi Pad Edit.
And whether the 4K sounds extremely better than the newer 16 bit MPCs is arguable. Just because it has 24 bit convertors doesn't mean those sound necessarily better than 6 years newer and better engineered 16 bit convertors and their analog stages. Just take a look at the 16 bit Apogee Mini-Me. There are many opinions on sound quality differences between convertors and it seems to be a highly subjective matter, but there are many users who had both the 4K and the 5K that support the notion that the 5K sounds improved upon the 4K.
There's more the 4K is lacking compared to the 5K: aside from 8 track HD recording, the 5K has the (actually really good sounding) synth, a flexible arpeggiator, fully expanded connectivity by default, Continuous Sample Tracks, Pad Mute Groups, strength and Window parameters in Timing Correct, no need to stop the sequencer for on the fly edits and more.
Sure there's stuff the 4K has that I wish the 5K featured too: 512 MB max memory and SMPTE In/Out.
@ Sinik: if you can get both the 2500 and the 5000 for the same price (and if the 2k5 actually has a HDD included),
there's no contest. Go with the 5K because it has only advantages over the 2K5:
- ADAT 8 channel digital lightpipe output
- phono input
- much more qlink controls
- the synth
- 2 x the sampler polyphony (64 voices)
- 960 ppqn resolution compared to only 96 ppqn on the 2k5
- 192 MB max memory compared to 128 MB
- HD recording that actually isn't a workaround like with JJOS
- more filter types
- 4 x simultaneous effects (8 compared to only 2 on the 2k5)
- bigger display (240 x 128 compared to 240 x 64)
Also see this comparison chart:
http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/article/1 ... chart.html[Don't know for certain if JJOS improves any of the above compared features on the 2k5.]
Especially the number of simultaneous effects and voice polyphony indicates the processor(s) in the 5K is/are much more powerfull than the one(s) in the 2k5. Of course all the MPC's processors are nothing compared to a multicore Intel CPU

Like I said if you can get both for approximately the same price, the decision should be easy. The 5K doesn't need a third party OS and is much more powerfull straight out the box than you could ever pimp a 2k5.
JJ constantly updating JJOS for the 1K and 2k5 is really a good thing, but there's only so much a developer can do in a limited environment, with limited processing ressources and screen real-estate. Now if AKAI came out with an OS 3.0 for the 5K and improve on it's features even more or - one can dream - hire JJ again for an OS upgrade for the 5K.. hehe...
