Where can I buy CDROM internal power cable?

Hello,

I've been searching for days on the net for an internal powercable to hook up a cdrom drive to the 4K. It's the same one as the one between the harddrive and the motherboard (?)
The plug for hooking up the cdrom drive is a molex 4pin. The other end however which goes into the powersocket on the motherboard of the 4K is smaller than a molex plug but bigger then the floppy drive power plug (I dont know the name of this connection type).

Where can i buy such a cable?

The power cable for the cd/dvd drive is the same as for the HDD and they are akai specific parts, they are also difficult to find.

I contacted numark about it, it was a waste of time.

I then bought a cable from ebay that claimed to be the correct power cable for the mpc4k. I burnt 2 HDD's and froze the mpc4k power supply, I thought I'd killed it!

Best bet, contact vst services and ask if they have any spares from a junked mpc 4k. I needed 2 power cables and the 2 mounting plates, I was lucky as they had them.

I've asked VST and MPCstuff. This is the reaction of mpcstuff via ebay:

"We do but they are expensive 45 each"

$45 for a little cable? I mean it's not even the cable i really need but the little plug to connect to the motherboard of the 4K!!! Does anyone know a place where i can buy just the little 'Akai specific' plug besides above mentioned websites?
It's probably a marketing technique of Akai so you just can't hookup your old cdrom drive or something. Lame...

I have only looked in the Service Manual and to me the plug looks like a floppy power plug.

That plug also used to be known as a mini molex because they were designed by the same company.
It is very easy to get (big) molex to floppy power cables on ebay for a few bucks as HD cables often had a floppy power plug daisy chained onto it.

If you buy a "floppy power" cable that will be a female floppy plug (correct for what I think is on the Akai PCB) to a molex male plug which is wrong for plugging into the CD Rom. This is why you have to buy the daisy chained version and cut off the section you don't need.

The difficult part is what voltages are on the 4 pins on the Akai board? It should be 12v 0v 0v 5v with the yellow being 12v and the red 5v. The two black wires are grounds.

If Akai are anything like E-mu then they may have reversed the positions of the 12v and 5v lines to prevent people using off the shelf computer power cables. The fix is real simple if that's the problem though - the pins can easily be slipped out of the plastic body of the plug (using a very small screwdriver to push down the part that holds it in) and swapped around into the other positions, no soldering no hassle.

Seriously, proceed with caution - if you can't be sure what voltages are on the pins on the Akai PCB then don't experiment!
Just get the correct part at its exhorbitant cost, because it will be worth it not to stuff up your machine.

The power connector to the 4K is NOT a floppy drive mini molex. I've bought this cable (female-female) but the plug is too small. The size for the PCB is exactly between the 5,25" molex and the floppy mini molex, not a standard PC plug...

That's why i'm desperately looking for one, but not for the listed price

I don't think people realize that this cable is gonna be a problem in the future. The price is only getting higher as the demand grows bigger. Or you must be willing to buy a cdrom drive from ebay for $100. Im not going to do that.

But on the other hand: if u must pay $45 for a little piece of plastic then $100 for a complete kit is nothing.....

What a pain, I wonder what that bastard plug is then!

If it's made for Akai for the MPC then it is going to be quite costly to get the cables.

It sure is i'm afraid.. Strange thing is: I've never heard anyone about these cables nor their costs. I've got a feeling that a lot of 4K users don't know about this. If you would tell me about it like a week ago, i probably would have laughed like a non-believer.

That is about what I paid for my cables when I bought them. The total bill was around £50 including shipping for the 2 plates and 2 cables.

If you have one good cable in your 4000, you can buy a splitter cable and use that to power both drives. US$2.00
