Thats what i use to do. Sold my motif. but I'd save a song on motif, and always try to name it the same as whatever project folder name was on the mpc. gotta admit, kind of sucky cause after like 30 beats you start to loose track, and if you don't save everything exactly like it should be, going back is like reinventing the wheel.
then, I'd have those beats where I only need 1 bass patch. so i made a template song where I loaded up 16 of my favorite bass patches. whenever i made a beat that needed just a bass sound, id go back to that same song, then just flip channels on the mpc - this way i didnt have like 100 songs of the same thing.
thinking back on all this. I should have just sampled my favorite bass patches and made a pgm.
the biggest issue was alot of times the way the beat turned out was dependent on me tweaking a nice patch just right, and playing it just right. so if i were to sample it and not save anything on the motif - if i had to go back, it would be near impossible to recreate or redo a part if neccesary. so i always opted to save on the motif in parrellel so i had the option to go back if needed.
