In this video Jonny Miller (Sidestepper Recordings) demonstrates a useful technique to create interesting percussion patterns by using the arpeggiator in Ableton Live.

cant check the video, but you can hook up the mpc to a virus synth for example and use the synths arpeggiators to trigger and play whatever sounds on your mpc.. Used to do that a lot ages ago with a mpc2kxl, and even more interesting if you also send the sound through the synths filters and effects

yeah its a great combination, i had the virus indigo 2.. all effects and filters that you can use on the synth can also be applied to whatever you send through the external inputs.. so you can think of it as a massive Q-link section if you have lots of knobs etc.. and it can all be recorded an automated in realtime via midi.. so it is much faster than if you were to sit and automate it in the computer with mouse and keyboard.. then iside the synth, you can split the channel furtherly and route it to other patches for more processing.. the synth also has an envelope follower so you can basically have a synth move in time with whatever it is you send to it.

had to sell mine though, wish i still had it as i am a bit curios to see how it goes with a 4k

but there are many other synths that can take external audio too..
