Yo! is it just me? or does everyone do this....

is it just me.. or do you sample something.... and chop it up.. then end up trying out multiple ways to play the sample out (depending on the sample obviously) over different beats and drum sounds, and you end up with multiple versions of similar sounding joints?

I was diggin thru the mpc and found this. its from like 3 years ago or so. But I recall sampling this merry go round sounding carnival music thinking, how in the hell can I chop and make this work in a Track lol. So I tried it 4-5 different ways, until I got bored, lost the idea/inspiration and ditched it. As I stumbled across this project in the mpc and heard the different attempts I made, I stopped and wondered... obviously I cant be the only one that does this, but how common is it?
ya know? Jus sayin... lol

anyway, the sample unchopped goes first. then the different sequences changes after are obvious.
The problem for me arises when I go back and listen to multiple projects I have like this, that were started and not finished (like70% of my material/and my plague as a producer) and I try to decide which if any of the potential ideas to try and develop into a full blown finished joint.
So.. is it just me?

solid drums and some variations would really set this thing off

my favourite is the arpeggiated bit at the end.

so besides the fact that you like it, do you also do what described?
I mean that sh!t is like a plague for me. If I have 100 beats on deck right now.. I'de say maybe 5 or less are finished.
And even the word finished is broad right now. Some joints just need to be mixed, but several others are just incomplete ideas.

also.. the SEQ between :19 and :30 seconds seems the most original to me, and the one I thought most about developing further.

But the original SEQ I created first is the one that starts at :31 seconds and goes till :54 seconds. the second was the change up that Mr.Debauch described as arpeggiated. which is why i left an example of those two connected from 1:06 till the end.

that one might be worth developing too.

I do this sort of thing in the MP all the time... I'll have 10 variations of drums, loops and tempo etc.

I guess that's the beauty of pattern based sequencing.

I know very well what ur talkin about.. And in the end putting all the sequences into one song wouldn't even make sence, cos it would sound confused, like shit where's this going ?!?
Just shows how original you can be "eventhough" you're "steeling" music..

...still can be kinda frustrating because you end up with a shit load of unfinished projects

Yes 95% of my beats is like that

I like the first one and the second to last one the arpeggiated one. Anyway I usually make 1 track and if Im not feeling it Ill just dump it right away. If I cant get the beat sounding right within the first half hour or so Ill just move on. I get bored easily.

All the time, but I chop the good sounds that twinkle my ear, then play around until it sounds like music. Its good to let it marinate a day or two and then go back because then ideas expand than what you had that day. Sometimes I get started on a direction the first day but the next day I'll have a **** attitude and get crazy. Most times the chorus becomes the beat for the verses and vice versa.

True...or I make a sequence and check it later and don't like it. Or I forget about one, stumble upon it one day and love it.

There was an interesting section in the rjd2 q&a on gearslutz...he was asked about how many of his works in progress actually become complete tracks. He said his ratio is getting better and better, now that he's gotten better at discerning what is a waste of time before sampling and all that. That happens to me alot, I'll sample, chop, and arrange something and then don't like it at all...So I'm working on that.

thats me for sure. but the thing i realized is, you are always your worst critic, and better than you think you are. some of your unfinished shit is actually finished.

I tend to find being organized also helps with this. like, having goals and standards and staying organized.

If a beat isnt at like 8,9, or 10, ditch it, or have some kind of seperation between "for sures" and "not so sures" so you are atleast clear on the beats and they aren't all just mixed up in one big pile.

its also about being decisicve. like you mentioned about rjd2....you gotta decide early on whats a waste of time and what isnt. i know thats hard cause some times you experiment on some crap shit and come up with some gold........but atleast you gotta be feeling that tingle in your ear.

Ive got hundreds of beats i've wasted time on, sampled some ill stuff, and sample as actually very very good, but for whatever reason i just couldn't pull it off or wasnt feeling it in my own way to make it nice.........

whatever you do, dont get stuck on a beat. work on it, then let it site for a day or 2. comeb back, and if its still nice, keep going at it. dont beat yourself up if its not working.

i have some more thoughts on this, ill chime in later, but im off to bed.
