I mean so of the best stuff i've ever for was some record of folk songs from argentina(lots of funky pan pipes and ish)and i got it at grage sale for .25 cents. and i usually listen to a record before i buy it as well, no sense buying somthing you can't use..

Budget is sitll a factor, cos u may have got 1 record for 25 cents but how many dope record have u found like that? for that kinda price.

out of the hundreds of records u may have only a handful were really dope and really cheap.

besides i aint tryna listen to know wack folk album just to find one open bagpipe break, that aint the kinda music i wanna make.

but if ur making hip hop for hippies or anticon fans then please continue

yeah i only sample what i like and what sounds good to me. i think when the sample gets u amped the beat will be ten times iller then if u just tried to make some ish outta anything. thats cool to make u listen to diff music and to make u work with whatever, but most of the time im using breakbeats and old funky ish.

you got any bagpipe records? I get a lot of good shit cheap and you don't need to listen to the whole album. spot the break in the grooves. no i'm not a big anticon fan but if you want to hear some dope production you should listen to JEL 10 sec or greenball albums or Alias muted. For the record I F-in hate hippies

peace
For the record I F-in hate hippies
The irony is that most of the artists we sample were from the hippie era.

Try not to hate anything. You'll live longer.
(and no a hippie didn't tell me that)

P.S. how do i quote like everyone else does?

Listen im not hating on hippies, let me make that point.

i think what I was trying to get accross is that if ur not selective about the samples u use in ur production u may end up making music that sounds like some anticon/edan/def jux hybrid.

now u may like that sound but its not very appealing to me personally.

i dont condone a dusty fingers...**** that in my opinion. i think it defeats the purpose of really digging for gems...look, he plays lots of library sht, lots of obscurities, i dont care whos been diggin for 20 years, alot of the sht on those artists albums has not been flipped yet, plain an simple...so go find the album, instead of relying on some dude making mixes for hip hop producers to make beats with haha..thats just lame i think...i find sht ALL THE TIME that hasnt been sampled yet, u just gotta dig deeper man, thats it. and listen better. you might as well buy a drum sample cd to go along with your dusty fingers. sampling compilations to me isnt always a bad thing, especially if its the more slept on dj mixes you know, or some out on the wing sht, my boy binger sampled a real ill track off a compilation, but no one is flowers with that, ive done it before too, i sampled jazz bizniz (which is a compilation for jazz fans)..but DF is targeted directly at hip hop producers, and should just be called 'heres some samples for you lazy a$s producers" with a disclaimer that says "want to be like your favorite producer??? want to know the secrets??? dig in the crates like madlib??? have drum breaks like primo??? now you can do alll that with my new compilation!"

i have a couple volumes for listening purposes, but i wont sample something like that , when theres 10,000 madlib dick-riders all using it for there beats..thats just me..
example - i wonder how many producers bought the dusty fingers with the sven libaek track on it, i bet theres over 100 unheard beats using that same damn loop from the same dusty fingers record...but who do you know that has the sven libaek LP,or a 45 or something?? and flipped a beat off there? the numbers alot less.

what if i made a drum break compilation displaying all the rare hard to find breaks?? that shts just dumb, cuz theres some drum breaks too that havent been used. CLOSING STATEMENTS - i dont know why people think everythings been sampled, so you can still dig for gems, and if you dont think you can you arent listening to the right sht, and just remember when your sampling a dusty fingers volume your sampling the same thing hundreds of kids are beating off to at that very moment

/pumps fist in air

and its not about being a purist but come on man...i dont want something thats made specifically for producers who need samples, dusty fingers is in the same realm as prepackaged loop CDs

..sorry for the longwinded rant

yeah i feel that, they are like breakbeats for dummies. but they a good source to learn. I like them cause they get me up on groups like u were syain, casue if that one joint is tight u know the other songs on the album will have that potential. I also like to dj with them casue i dont really like usin my originals out. but all in all they like practice reocrds for me. just to use when im lazy or to listen

what is wrong with sampling just drum hits off them? i don't use any loops or breaks from them, but i will take a snare or bass drum and hi hats and so on.

i have dusty fingers vol 1 - 11, good tunes and it has turned me onto alot of great artists that otherwise i probably would have never heard of or found
saying a comp is lame is just being ignorant IMO :P
why dismiss good music

he isnt sayin they lame but to sample from them is kinda cheating in a sense of that someone else found the heat and compiled a record that most find on there own in dusty records. it kinda cheapens the whole experince, nah what i mean? u get all these kids samplin the same shit and just ownin bins of comps and say they "diggin" but thats current music for sale. u can get them anywheres

By gordongecko23 Thu Oct 14, 2004 11:13 pm
i mean i understand what he's sayin, i am just mean sampling single drum hits, isn't the same as taking a whole loop or what not. you take single hits and turn them into somethin else completely.

well see i cut up breaks and re arragne them and whatnot. so cats can identify my drums. but as stated in many threads. do what u gotta do. just understand that u tell pete rock or diamond d OH LOOK YO I GOT THIS BEAT FROM Pulp Fusion, they gonna think u a clown ass dude. they cool to buy and i do sample from them once and a while but i feel chessy. do what u gotta do though.

By gordongecko23 Fri Oct 15, 2004 12:59 am
yeah i totally feel what ur sayin.
good talk.

sometimes, i sample some s**t like for example that guitar from the worst comes to worst tune by the dilated peoples. ya'll know what i am talking bout, well i came across the original of that sample on a record i picked up. i just kinda did my own little remix with it.

sometimes that can be kinda fun, different acapella over it, different drums and so on. i mean i don't do that all the time, but with that one i had a real good time doin it. specially cause that sample is just freakin killer.

i think i put shook ones over that.

Reissue comps are useful only in certain situations. Believe me I have just about all the good comps (including Dusty's) and I use them sometimes when I DJ out so I don't have to bring the originals.

Digging is part of paying dues.
If you wanna find dope samples, you gotta dig.
You gotta actaully get DUSTY FINGERS.
Then you will appreciate and get the respect you deserve.
A lot of these kids don't even know the smell of mold. It's so sad.
All the heavyweight producers used to be regulars at the NYC record shows.
I attended the local swap meets every single weekend for 15 years straight and still going. I start at 7am while lazy asses sleep in.
I have seen and acquired many records. I have been approached by labels wanting to use my originals to make comps etc.. I turned them down.

Peace,
H
