I remember QuickDisk was used on one version of Nintendo NES system in Japan (it was called Famicom in Japan.) when I was a kid. It had cartridge slot and QuickDisk reader. Nintendo even made vending machine for selling game with QuickDisk, I remember seeing those in toy stores in Japan back then. I don't think Famicom's QuickDisk system got popular. Famicom was indeed popular, but none of my friends had Famicom with QuickDisk drive, let alone Sharp's Twin Famicon, which had cartridge slot and QuickDisk drive integrated in the unit.
Anyway, QuickDisk emulator would revive those old devices with QuickDisk system. It would be really exciting if it come true!

May i ask two more things ? :

-> Did you use DD or HD files images ? If you use HD files images can you try some DD (720KB) files images?
-> Can you disconnect the floppy cable from the HxC and take some voltage measurement on the floppy cable (S950 side)?

Someone here have the S950 service manual ?

Someone here have the S950 service manual ?


I searched for the service manual every now and then but didn't find it. Only found the s900 service manual. I can upload it if you want but although the s900 and s950 doesn't have much differences I guess in this case its useless cause the 900 have a different floppy drive.

According to the S900 service manual it's +5V, ground, ground +12V and if I remember well numbers 1,2,3 and 4 are written on the white connector to help when taking measures.

Some News :

I just got the floppy interface schematic page of the S950. Unlike others system the S950 use 56K ohms pull up instead of 4.7K/1K pull up on floppy inputs lines (READDATA, INDEX,TRACK00,READY,DENSITY,...)

So there are no enough signal current on the data lines and this make the thing unreliable.

So try to add a 4.7K ohms pull up resistor between the line READDATA (line 30) and the +5V (you can do this mod on the S950, on the cable or on the HxC. This is as you want).

You can also change R18 on the S950 by a 4.7Kohms ;)

Hey monowax, how are things running since performing this mod?

Everyone else here... have all of you that have an HxC hooked up to your S950 found that you've had to perform this mod as described above?

Sorry to hear that you're having problems with your 950, thanks for replying though and please keep me posted on any progress made. Hopefully someone else here will be able to offer me some feedback regarding the S950 and the HxC.

Out if interest though monowax, what problems are you currently having with the S950?

it's not that bad, i have two of them :D

there are two issues.
when i want to record a sample the monitor stays in the "overdriven" position all the time.
without anything connected to the 950.
the other problem is a system crash. if this happens the display shows a lot of weird letters and signs and some of the leds are flashing until i switch it off.
and it's not always done with a restart. sometimes i have to wait for some minutes.

i'll keep you posted when i brought it back to life.

Try to replace some electrolyte capacitors, this may help. :wink:

When I bought mine I had the same problem. Assuming you're going by the right procedure and formatting the disks first, get it serviced. It's not always the drive. In my case it was capacitors on the main circuit board. Luckily I bought it from Music Go Round, and they covered the cost of the repair.
