MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

Hi,

This is my first post, so Hello to all,

My first question is I've had my MPC 5000 for a while now, does anyone here know how to get the HD recorder of the MPC to send midi clock?

Many thanks.

there is no harddisk recorder in your MPC
and the harddisk in it can for sure not send Midi clock
but why would you need that ? Your MPC can send Midi clock, and your harddisk tracks will play along.
I believe it's about time you read up on Midi Sync in the big book that came with your MPC...

Hi and welcome to the forum!

From the Manual p. 185:

01. Connect the MIDI OUT of the MPC5000 to MIDI IN of the external MIDI device using a MIDI cable.
The MPC5000 has four MIDI Outs: MIDI OUT A, MIDI OUT B, MIDI OUT C, and MIDI OUT D. You can connect to any MIDI output, but for this
example connect to the MIDI OUT B.

02. Select the MIDI/SYNC mode by pressing the [MODE] button and hitting the [PAD 8] (MIDI/SYNC).

03. Press the [F2] (SYNC) button.
The SYNC page will be displayed.

04. Select the 'Sync out' field and then select the output of the MIDI clock.
You can send out MIDI clock from any of MIDI OUT A or B or C or D. When you select 'AB', MIDI clock is sent from both MIDI OUT A and B. In
this example, since you have connected the external MIDI device to MIDI OUT B in step 1, select MIDI OUT B.

05. In the 'Mode' field choose MIDI Clock.

06. Press the [MAIN] button.
The MAIN page, where you play back the sequence, will be displayed.
07. Set the external MIDI device to receive the MIDI clock.
08. With help on setting up your external device, please refer to the device’s operation manual.
09. Press the [PLAY START] button.
The MPC5000 starts playback and the external MIDI device should start playback at the same time.

It's a global setting for the MPC 5K. Instead of "06. Press the [MAIN] button." press [MODE] button + [PAD 15] for Song Mode.

What are you talking? Of course there's an HD recorder in the MPC 5000
And the 5K in Song Mode will for sure play the 8 HD tracks plus sync via MIDI Clock to and from any external machine that can sync to and/or from MIDI Clock.

Thta's great as I wanted to do that live on a couple sonss where the samples where a bit long, but still wanted to have synths bubbling along in time. The other thing that I can't find in the manual is running the HD tracks alongside midi tracks. Just wondering if anybody had tried this.

In Song Mode you have to chain your sequences (which were created in main mode).

I acknowledged there is a harddisk in MPC5000, and I do know you can record audio on it...but calling it a 'hard disk recorder which should be able to send midi' in my opinion sounded as the TS did not really grasp the concept that it is not the harddisk in the MPC5000 that actually sends out Midi sync information.
You have the MPC itself that sens Midi OUT/Clock, and you have an harddisk onwhich you can record tracks, in sync with MPC's Midi clock (note that it does not even have to be the case : you can record tracks at 120 bpm, then set MPC on 150 BPM and the harddisk tracks still will be 120 BPM)
I do own an MPC5000, be it with the harddisk disabled as I can't stand the noise HD's makes and I record my tracks into a DAW anyway, so I don't see any need for it in my case as I have quite some analog gear that I record into MPC instead of having a harddisk of (other people's) samples.
