808 Long Kick

yeah, turn the decay up so it roll out instead of a dead cutoff... and also use the low pass filter ... sometimes 808's click so adjusting the start time by the lowest digit sometimes helps...

sounds like switch mixed the left and right channels at full volume, and since they were both the same, it just doubled the output levels, which could cause distortion.

to properly mix l/r signals to a mono signal, they need to be added at 50% each.

personally i think switch is awful software...audacity handles converting mono->stereo and vice versa very well.

make sure you set it to mono (mute group if you're using a lot of different ones) otherwise they sound really distorted.

I get distortion with my 808's even if the AD is not clipping...I can fix it by turning the volume down on the sample to like 90 instead of 100, plus make the program 'MONO" so the sample is not overlapping!

ok, i feel like i am making a bit of progress here but not enough.

If i open one of these files in audacity, goldwave etc and then play just one channel its fine. BUT: i am struggling to create a new mono file from either the left or right. extracting to mono seems to sum both channels so its no good.

can someone advise???!! i only want one channel. and i need a bit of software that will do bulk edits since i have a lot of files to work with

1. in audacity, on the left hand side of the track, next to the x, there is the name of the file. click on that, and then scroll down to 'split stereo track'.

this will now 'separate' that stereo track into two tracks.

2. click on the filename again on the first track and see where 'left channel' is checked. change that to 'mono'.

(in some versions of audacity you can just choose 'split to mono track' to combine both those steps into one).

3. now double click inside the waveform to select the whole thing.

4. go up to file->export selection.

5. choose wav signed 16bit pcm (or something that looks like it).

this should create a new mono file from whichever channel you converted to mono.

im not sure about bulk in audacity.

honestly sox + some linux scripting would probably be yer best bet for processing a lot of files like that.

think i got this working using goldwave and its non-intuitive batch mode. strange thing is this though:

i already had a program created, so all i was doing was editing the wav files to remove one channel (R in this case). previewing the files on my 2500 (before loading the program) only played them through the left speaker. however once the program was loaded they were centred.

is there something particular about the 2500 preview mode that caused this? or is it the way i saved the file?

using JJOS xl3 by the way.

You should narrow down what is casing problem. There are a few possible scenarios (that I can think of) that why you get the distortion with long 808 kick.
(If you have the issue with only the long 808 kick in the mix, then I think there is issue with your mix.)

Possible scenarios:
1. 808 kick is set in "poly" in MPC's program. (use "mono")

2a. MPC-1000's pre-amp is not able to drive the super low 808 kick, which is most likely normalized.
2b. Your speaker and / or amplifier is not able to express the 808 kick sample. (low end sound requires more wattage than mid-range in the same decibel level)
How to find out: Use other audio device (burned CD, audio via USB sound interface, etc.) to play exactly the same sound. Check whether it sound different or not.

3. Because of your room. I presume that your room is not acoustically treated (no bass traps, etc.)
