Sample Chopping MPC 3000

So, I just watched this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehvNQUNh-JQ Im waiting for my 3000 and I have been reading the manual and I cant seem to understand why this guy recorded .1 seconds when he dropped the needle and then went and recorded the sample after? I could be missing something but I dont recall seeing that in the manual? I just dont get at the end why he put his music sample onto a little chop?

The Soft St (soft start) field: When a sound is played, play actually starts not at the absolute beginning of the sound but rather at the position within the sound specified in this field. It is actually three interrelated fields:
1. Seconds (0-999), 2. Milliseconds (0-999), and 3. Samples (0-43; at the 44.1kHz sample rate, there are
approximately 44 samples to a millisecond.) Increasing this value above 000.000.00 will cause the sound to start playback from a location later than the actual start, but will retain the unused beginning portion of the sound. It is possible to delete this unused portion by using the <Do> soft key, described below. To find the best soft start address for the sound automatically, use the <Best st> soft key, described below.

Im guessing that has something to do with it?

Just got this thing and it is nasty. You think I should learn this OS 3.11 before I get Rohan's?

Another video showing you how to do it, although it's on the MPC-60 it has the latest OS which is basically the 3000 OS ported on the 60 and the chopping works the same

Yeah I have been skipping AD productions first step and just using the soft start and end to chop then I just read the softstart and end still keeps the unwanted parts in memory but i guess a workaround is just only sample a couple seconds at a time?! this machine is real nice though.

I have been do all of his steps but when it comes to the part of me assigning the chop to the pad i cant get any sound but when I am in the edit sound page the chop plays. Also, when I when I hit copy>zone>temp the guys mentions the screen says copying. Mine just flashes real quick, but when i do insert>temp>zone it takes a second. I literally tried this for 3 hours. Im banging my head!

Not trying to sound like a know it all but I dont think that step in that video of sampling .1 seconds of sound is necessary. If you sample your loop. copy it as many times as you want to chop it, adjust the first copy to how you want it to sound, then go over to delete before soft start and del after soft end it gets rid of the unwanted parts of the sample and there is no need to insert your sample into another .1 second sample. Correct me if Im wrong?!
