Cleaning tape residue off?

Soooooooo I just got a 45 in the mail I bought off ebay...it came packed in the usual 12" cardboard package, however there was a smaller piece of cardboard on top of the 45 and that was taped down to the inside of the package, why I don't know... I suppose to keep it "secure" during shipping. Thing is, the 45 slipped halfway OUT the sleeve, and this dipshit layed packing tape right down on top of it! Must have been drunk...

I was able to slowly peel the tape off, but now there's residue from the tape on the outer grooves...anyone have any good suggestions on how to clean this shit off without damaging the 45?

i'll be honest - i have not used it on records, but i have used it to remove sticker residue from tons of shit both plastic and glass... used it all over the external non-lubed bits of a tech 1200. nice thing about 99% is that it evaporates super quick...

records are plastic, so i don't really see how it could damage or 'dissolve' anything... you could always take some old crapper record you don't care too much about and give it a wipe down with the 99% just to see if it does anything.

a big part of record cleaning solution is alcohol.

also, it works great for cleaning off 'tape' residue left from nasty old reels (what i thought you were asking about before i read the slightly lamer-tape experience you are having ).

Emailed the seller on ebay...that dude is alright! He asked if I wanted a replacement or a refund...after learning it'd be a month or two before another replacement would be in stock, I asked if I could keep the 45 if I got a refund...checked my email shortly after and the money was already in there- get to keep the 45...cool beans.

yeah acetone works quite well also... in fact it works slightly better on some glue then alcohol...

that's what I thought too! I'll happily use alcohol to clean tape-head and I used to use it on records, but alcohol dissolves something in the vinyl which binds it together, so it won't damage it directly, but it makes the vinyl more brittle.

Though in the past, using alcohol on vinyl LPs was considered safe, experts now caution against it unless absolutely necessary, as alcohol threatens the loss of the plasticizer or stabilizer.

to get that gluey shit from packing tape off I'd probably still go for alcohol though
