Sample Sounding Quite

Hey guys using a MPC 1000, with a turntable connected directly to the MPC. My problem is once i chop up the sample and assign. It Sounds really quite. Ends up my drums are dominating the sound compared to the sample. What am i doing wrong here?

are you using any type of mixer or phono pre amp before you run the turntable to the mpc? you can't really just plug a turntable straight into a 1000 for it to effectively work.

No i am not, what sort of mixer do you advise?

DJ mixers often have a phono input (meaning it has a phono preamp) some of the kaoss pads also come with a phono input... or you could get yourself a standalone phono preamp which may be the cheapest option.

How about a Behringer Xenyx802 Mixer with a phono preamp?

I decided to get a pre phono stereo amp, but my question is what the benefit with a mixer for the MPC 1000?

Up the rec level knob around 1 o'clock. I'm using an external EMU 0404 USB soundcard, I set the main volume to around 12 o'clock. Then I normalize all my samples. If needed I save the samples to my CF card and open it up in FL Studio and applying some compressor there. You got a compressor in both effect slots, but I tend to prefer to pre-compress my sounds before I apply effects on 'em.

well the point was... DJ mixers often have phono preamps (ie: phono inputs for turntables) so that would amplify the signal.. and it would output it to a line level signal which is what you want for your record input on the mpc. also the mixer likely has a 3 band EQ to tweak samples before recording them.

You have to understand that in order for music with bass to be put onto a vinyl record most of the bass is reduced and the treble is boosted. This is done in accordance with a standard known as the RIAA equalisation curve.

Therefore, when you play a record back the phono stage not only boosts up the overall tiny level from the cartridge-stylus, but it also massively boosts the bass and cuts the treble. Again this is done in accordance with the RIAA curve, and the end result is that you get a full range sound on playback.

The tiny grooves in the vinyl surface simply can't capture bass at full level - you wouldn't be able to fit even one song on the record if the bass was there at full level.

Was your sample also lacking in bass and had too much treble?
