more midi from sonar 1.0 to mpc2000xl problems

I'm using
Sonar 1.0 on my pc linked to my 2000xl via a 1x1 edirol usb midi interface

Here's what i'm trying to do
I want to be able to record midi data into sonar from the mpc by playing the pads, then I want the playback the midi data I just recorded whilst recording more midi data to another track in sonar.

I can record a single track of midi data from the mpc to sonar and play it back but it's playback and recording at the time !

Is this possible with the mpc and sonar ?
If so what setting on the mpc midi input and output windows so I need to use ?
and how shoud I set up sonar up to work with it
omni a omni b omni ab as track device 1 etc I seem to be getting stuck in some midi loops or have no sound at all
Can anyone help ??

follow me for a second and we'll go through some steps...

open a new project in sonar.

insert two midi tracks.

set one midi track to MIDI IN on channel 1 (NOT omni)
set the MIDI CH (midi channel) also to 1

set the other midi track to MIDI IN on channel 2 (NOT omni)
set the MIDI CH (midi channel) also to 2

by doing this we are making sure each track only recognises and replays its own midi channel. the output will be the same on each of course (edirol)

now on the MPC set the midi channel to 1

ARM the midi track on Track 1.

hit record, play some pads for a number of bars

press stop, and make sure midi data was recorded.

now DISARM that track.

set the MPC midi channel of what you're tweaking to channel 2

ARM track 2 in sonar

hit record... play some pads....

hit stop...

now you should have data on track 2



that should solve your problems with sonar. if it still isnt good let me know and we'll go through the MPC more and your midi device.

Thanks for getting back to me on this one it's been really annoying me
There's a couple of things i'm not sure i understand

1) "now on the MPC set the midi channel to 1" what do you mean by this couls you expalin more about how the mpc should be set up ? what parameters do i need to change ? where are they ?

2) When i change the channel on the midi track in sonar it's changes the out to general midi there my edirol option go's this only happen when setting channel 1 not 2 on the 2nd midi track
