moby's is pretty cool.. there was a video showing it more in depth.. he has a LOT of vintage drum machines (50+ ?) and that's in the other room from the studio area... in the studio room with the computer etc... I think he mentioned that he has a sub floor with a couple of tons of sand etc.

I'd say most pre-production/programming takes place in home or project studios. Producers can save money by only using commercial studios when they need to mix, master and record vocals/live instruments.
