You said USB so I'm gonna assume you have a 500/1000/2500 or 5000, it's always good to specify what MPC you when asking for help.
The USB cable is for syncing your MPC to you PC/Mac so it appears as a removable hard drive. Then you can copy whatever you need to the CF card inserted in your MPC, single hits, loops, full songs, already made folders, whatever.
You can't make the MPC read mp3's and the USB is only transferring data the same as any USB HD cable.
You will need to make mp3's into WAV's on your computer. This is kinda like thinning paint though, and your should aim for WAV's as your original source if possible. If you have no choice you could make the mp3 a WAV in iTunes or WMP, or google free wave editors (Audacity for example) if you want something with more feature to edit WAVS. You need the WAV to be 16 bit/44100khz.
You could also use your CD player/home stereo to send a signal to the MPC, but you'll need 2 RCA to 1/4" adaptors for the MPC end of the connection. Or buy a cable with RCA's on one end and 1/4" pair on the other end, just hit up Radio shack.
Read the manual (download pdf from Akai if you don't have a paper one), read up on stuff on this site, and try Tweakheadz site to familiarize yourself with the basics. I also recommend buying whichever of MPC Tutor's tutorial books applies to your MPC from the ads on this site. It is money very well spent, and will likely save you weeks if not months of confusion as you are very new to this.
Good luck and have fun man.
