ChoppingQuestions From A New Guy

whats up everybody out there im sure this question has been asked but i just got a mpc 1000 upgraded hardware and got the 2gb memory card and the jjos system im have some questions about chopping/slicing. for example how do u chop a sample of a a loop in a way that u can press any pad and it will go smoothly with any other pad. the way i tried was just a loop and you would have to just play the whole loop in order or it would sound like a big mess or choppy tunes. i know u can spread a loop over 16 or 32 pads but still if u dont play them in order they sound like patches of shit.im not sure if im not sampling right or is it what im sampling. i dont want to just loop and add drums on top. i would like to re arange the sounds in the way i would want them. im not sure is it how long my loop is are what. any info you could provide thanks alot. is there i button i could press or what? thanks again everybody out there

Not really sure I understand what you're asking, as I don't know what you're doing now that sounds so wrong

You should look at the waveform when chopping, and chop between the hits or between the notes, which you can see on the waveform where the wave is at the minimum. That avoids having half a beat at the end of one chop and the other half at the start of the next chop.

if you're just chopping a drum break that's pretty easy to do, as you usually get silence between the hits, even if the hits are very fast or close together, so it's probably easiest to practice chopping simple drum breaks, not complex pieces of music with many instruments

The "Beat Making on the MPC1000" e-book sold on this site is very useful for getting started, definitely worth the money. There are tutorials on chopping samples on the web and plenty of videos on youtube e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3qaYptKrTk

it just seems that if i loop a sample i have to play the sample in order in the way i loop it even if i chop the loop into (lets say 8 pads) i would have to play it lile pad1 pad2 pad3 pad 4 pad 5 pad 6 pad 7 pad 8 in order to sound like any thing. i couldnt play pad 5 then pad 5 and the pad 6 and have it sound like anything im going to add a youtube video i saw that made me ask this question

I can only guess what you're doing but I'd guess that you've picked a difficult sample for a beginner, or that you're chopping it at the wrong places

if your sample is 10 beats long and you chop it into 8, then it's not going to work. if you chop it into 10 it will work, each of the chops will contain exactly one beat.

if your sample is 4 bars long and you chop it into 8, each sample will be half a bar, but will fit in time and you should be able to play them in any order

I thought that was the point of the video you linked to: "you want to make sure you have the chops in sync with each other"

as he explains, you need to have your sample the right length, then chop it into the right number of pieces.

if you can't make it work, start with something simpler until you've figured out the basics.

thanx pastor of muppets this may sound like a another dumb question and sry for my ignorance but will the mpc tell u how many bars a sample is and when chop it u would slice into regions? and also will that beat making on the mpc 1000 digital book worth it

yes, the book's definitely worth it

You need to be able to count the number of beats and the number of bars yourself, counting rhythm is a basic requirement for making music.

get the e-book, practice chopping and arranging sounds, keeping it basic and simple before you try to chop anything too complicated that you can't manage

no, it's cool - everyone starts somewhere - just remember to start basic and practice until it comes naturally.

after that you'll also need some musical skill ... that's what I'm missing now that I've figured out the basics of how to use my mpc!

iight eveyone on here has been real helpfull so hopefull yall can come though and save me again but anyways i chopped my loop and sliced it on every beat perfectly but when i got to record it there is either not enough time or there is a little gap afterwards i think its a tempo problem but im not sure another issue im having is once i lay them down they are not smooth like there is a lil space between them which could be messing up the timing any clues how to correct this thanx in advance
