808 overusage

But besides the Roland TR-808 and TR-909 are there any other instantly recognisable kick sounds out there?

I ask because if there are perhaps they get overused too...such as LinnDrum = Prince.

well I just call those types of kick drums 808s as do many people simply cause we know what we mean by the term... and chances are it came from an 808... however, many other drum machines from that era did do similar kicks and drum sounds in general

a 606 sounds a hell of a lot like an 808, just not as adjustable.

If I remember correctly the Roland CR-78 also has certain 808 sounds including the kick?

Much cheaper alternative source.

I like 808 kicks if used 'tastefully', which sometimes means pitching up.

yeah that roland CR is cool, but if I'm not mistaken it does genre patterns with a tempo knob only.. like really old drum sections on those organs (think baldwin, and what have you) so like.. you pick ska, swing, samba, or one of those generic styles and it plays the sequence.. your only real tweakable option is the tempo which is not exact even... it is just a knob and you go by ear...

Yes the CR-78 is severely limited in it's operation as a drum machine.

I actually meant the Roland CR-8000in my previous post not the CR-78, didn't realise my error until I looked for a video of the drum sounds. Both are predecessors to the TR-808 I believe and share much of the 808's components, knobs and buttons.

Those CR-8000 sounds are fair game to a samplist who cant afford a real TR-808.

My bad scooby, just a heads up for the budget conscious.

Speaking of 808 overusage, I believe it gave birth to and defined the crunk style attributed to 'Lil Jon.

It also appears to have killed them both off...which isn't a bad thing.

Spot on. The TR808 kick is not a static thing and with the drum machine it has potential to sound a different, as in the pitch and decay. But I definitly can hear it used in things, and find the TR909 a bit more tekno sounding. As a few of us have gotten a whole load of these samples i wonder how close they are to the original?? I try to get em unprocessed and think i have managed to score a few. I have a Sequential drum tracks BUT it has LINN chips replacing some of the sounds. These are old school UV EPROMs which show no origin at all, just names written on em. It takes more than one EPROM to make a complex long sound like a cymbal as well. So i guess there are not many like this around, in fact i have never seen a simillar one ever. Hit me up for a drumtraks program

whoa that sounds very interesting... if you had a bunch of wave samples of that I would gladly take a listen.
