How's it going people? I've done a video demonstrating how to do a round robin effect on the JJOS MPC's :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9waaCMDuIE

A while ago I posted up about MPC macros. The idea involves JJ's MIDI to note feature, multi-timbral mode and routing the MPC 's MIDI back into itself. (A lot of my other macro's also use simult – but the one in this tutorial doesn't).I've found it useful for various things but this is my step by step guide to creating an MPC “round robin” or pad cycle effect.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the term, samplers with a round robin mode will change the sample you hear each time you hit a particular note .e.g A pad could play sample 1 on the first hit, sample 2 on the second hit etc and finally back to sample 1. It will cycle through each sample in turn.

The important steps are as follows:

1. Assign MIDI notes to the MPC buttons.

The most important ones for the round robin are the bank buttons. I restrict my button assignments to midi notes 0-35 and 100-127 as these are out of the normal range of the MPC pads – (although 0-35 does trigger bank D when received at the MIDI input). Banks A to D are assigned to note numbers 20-23.

2. Turn off the MIDI button input for the moment and turn on the MIDI out.*

*Select an output that is different to the mult timbral input for that channel e.g dont send MIDI on channel 1 if your planning on playing the pgm on channel 1. I tend to put my “receive” tracks higher up e.g.set the MIDI out to channels 15 or 16.These tracks are usually blank, but they dont have to be -e.g if you want to layer up two pgms.

3. Choose the pad containing the sample that you want to be first in the cycle

4. Change the midi out note to match the note assigned to the Bank B button.

5. Assign the 2nd sample in the cycle to the same number pad on bank B -change the midi out note to the note assigned to the Bank C button.

6. Repeat this for the 3rd and 4th sample , assigning them the midi out notes that trigger the Bank D and Bank A buttons accordingly.

7. Now turn on the MIDI to button input. Also turn on multi timbral mode if it is not on already. Using a MIDI lead Connect the MIDI output to the MIDI input assigned to the button mode. In my case I send out of MIDI A and button mode receives on MIDI 2.

Now your ready to play!

Other things to remember

If you want to change pad settings of a cycle pad you need to either disconnect the MIDI cable, disengage the MIDI note to button or switch the MIDI out (e.g. from out A to out B). Otherwise your pad banks switch while your editing.

IMPORTANT FOR ALL MACROS :
Keep the destination track muted – otherwise notes get deleted during recording. I don't know why this happens – but I know that it does. I'm reluctant to call it a bug because its an unusual way of hooking up the MPC. If your round robin works by sending to MIDI channel 16 – just make sure track 16 is muted.

Thanks

Mike.

EDIT: I've re-upped this video because youtube degraded the audio quality after i tried to adjust the colour contrast! Apologies to those that have "liked" the video or commented on it. The original video is now unlisted on the original url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk_pv5RXLpI

Thanks again for the tutorial.
I've just tried it with a kick hihat snare hihat variation and I was playing with note repeat and TC. It was funny to observe the different swing settings with the pad bank LED animation.

I must check twice but think I could record without muting tracks.

Yeah it's a bit disconcerting at first (hard to explain but kind of B C D A lag)

This is a very cool workaround! I've been wanting this feature for a while now. Does anyone know the reason why it hasn't been added to the os yet, seems like it would be fairly easy to add (but then again I don't know s#!t about all that coding stuff JJ does)?

this is banannas.

OK, so i think this work around is sweet. but imagine if JJ actually implemented this feature!!! with chops as well! you could get like 32 chops cycling, etc.

if this video isn't proof that jj should build this feature in, then i dont know what is!

here is the page with 2 requests and visuals for round robin / pad cycle to be added to JJOS (one made by me, the other by ****) I also can't find it but this has been requested before in other threads by mp3,jpeg, and several other folks.

+1 for adding round robin playback mode!

+1 for mikolo for rockin that mpc!
