well are you talking about for installing an OS?

if so then I believe it is possible because I know it's possible to do so with scsi zip drives.

other then that one time you install the OS on the 2000XL, you dont need any drives to boot the machine.

the problem is that each time it boots it comes up with the message Insert mpc2000xl Disk and my floppy disk is broken along with my zip disk drive so can I boot it from the cd drive and how do I do that

from the akai pro website, download the OS (in your case you would get version 1.14 because 1.20 is only for people using an atapi CF reader)

then unstuff the compressed file to see the bits you need to burn.

go into nero or what ever you use.. choose data disk, make sure you dont put any folders because the OS files that you unpacked need to be right in the main area.. not in folders.

the price of experimentation is 25 cents for the CD.. if that dont work, you're screwed.

you would need to follow the instructions.. it involves you turning the machine on while holding a button.. i forget which one(s) cause it's been years.

I think the OS image on your 2000XL got corrupted. Your XL is trying to reload from floppy disk or zip drive, whichever is available. (unlike 2000 Classic, 2000XL has flash memory installed for OS.)

I haven't encountered the same issue with my XL, but this is what I would do (may or may not work):

Copy Akai OS (I think the file name is "MPC2KXL.BIN") to your zip disk. It should be copied to root directory. MPC-2000XL's OS image can be downloaded from Akai's website or Forat's website.

Your XL should load the OS image from floppy (or zip disk) automatically during booting phase.
