MPC5000 reviews, bug reports and fellow user support on the most recent standalone, hardware MPC from Akai

I'm trying to figure out if the 5000 will help my workflow. Right now I'm using Maschine and it's not really working for me so I"m looking at other options. I get tracks that are between 3 and 5 minutes long so I"m working in a linear fashion as opposed to pattern based. It's my job to add drums, percussion and sound effects. What I'd like to be able to do is load up the track on the hard disk recorder side and then create drum patterns I can attach to specific parts of the song while listening to the original track. I'm thinking I'd have to use song mode to get the patterns to line up to the original track correctly but from reading the manual that seems a pretty straight forward process. Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated!

I believe what you want is possible.
However, if you would like to 'try out' some drums while looping a part of a song, I don't think this would be possible as I believe that -running your song from harddisk- you can not loop parts of it.

You'd better load the whole song as one long sample, then make a 'contineous sample' of it so you can loop parts of it while trying out new percussion.

I don't work this way, but this seems possible to me. Load the song onto a pad, load percussion samples on other pads. Play percussion with the song and record back to disk. Might work well.

With the 5K you will hear the HD tracks only in Song Mode. So adding drums to them on the fly is not so easy. I think the Roland MV 8000 and 8800 can do that.

But like Seiko said, looping larger regions of a continous sample track will work on the 5K in Track Mode.

on the 2500 in pattern mode with jjos installed you can chop samples non destructively while the sequence is playing...not sure if this works in song mode
