Tone,
You must use 1.20 MPC-2000XL OS with IDE CF reader.
I have the 1GB Sandisk CF card that pictured above, and Sandisk Ultra II 2GB CF card (which is still sold in retail stores) that shown above (1GB shown above though) and both work fine.
I've tried with Trident 1GB CF card on my XL, and it not only that it does not work, it made XL to fail booting up. Obviously it doesn't work with XL. I think some of Trident 1GB cards work on XL (like some of member here reported), but it seems like it is depends on the batch. (There is a reason Sandisk CF cards are more expensive, I guess) I would stay away with those cheap brands for XL.
Before you blindly try other CF cards, make sure that your CF card reader is NON-swappable IDE CF card reader.
Also, double check all the connection again. the CF card reader does not have LED light, so it is hard tell whether power is fed or not. Make sure all the connection is solid. It is very common culprit.
Cleanup Smb Mess (a small OS X app) does NOT clean up ALL the hidden files though. However, Cleanup Smb Mess does clean up most of the mess OS X would leave on the folder, and works well with XL. I use Windows XP for transporting files on the CF card, because I don't have to worry about hidden files at all.
Hot-swappable CF card on 2000XL, on the other hands, it seems that it totally hates hidden files, even Cleanup Smb Mess does not work in this case.
