I use my MPC 1000 (jj os2xl) with midi drums and have some questions regarding the midi note to pad mapping. It's all working fine, but in the grid edit mode, the kick drum (note 36, pad A01) is displayed at the top, then the snare, and the hihats further down the screen.
This is really annoying, as sheet music for drums is written the other way around, kick at the bottom, snare in the middle, hihats at the top. I've tons of beats all written out like this, and am very used to sight reading the notation. Having the grid edit mode reflect this is very important.
I am thinking about remapping the notes/pads so for example pad A16 is triggered by note 36, this would mean the kick is displayed at the bottom of the grid edit scren. I am sort of curious if this rearrangement would cause major headaches in some other areas (16 levels, chromatic assignment, etc)? I haven't used these much so am only guessing. Will saved sequences be destroyed? I also play my MPC with the pads, and instinctively want the bass at the bottom, snares in the middle and cymbals at the top.. if this can be kept then that'd be cool.
I also have an option to choose which midi note gets sent from the drum kit, but somewhere there is a list of note names (like "acoustic kick", "electric snare rimshot"), which I'd like to keep if possible.
I dont really understand the jj mapping scheme so any tips would be great. Also, please let me know anything about remapping notes and pads which I may not have considered. I don't wanna put in loads of hard work now and discover later that it's all messed up! Cheers!
