playing live music is a completely different thing than studio music, imo.

went to an irish bar last friday and there were a pair of elderly irish chaps with a guitar, bass, and some mics doing a fine old job of getting everyone in the bar wound up. i appreciated it very much, and i have mad respect for people that can do that. but if i decided to learn irish/folk/drinking tunes and go play bars, i know i'd get bored out of my mind after six months -- playing the same songs each gig.

i'm too ADD for that; i like to constantly make new things !!

on the other hand, hendrix was pretty innovative.

yeah but he "played". he didn't learn how to read music or study theory. he simply played all the time. organic. just saying. to me it seems contradictory to what the thread is about

It is the same if you play a instrument. As a bass player I spend hours a day practicing different
(and some tedious) things such as finger control, scales, and and theory. No matter how you look and it you still have to learn to just play music .My opinion TYPO

how much can you do with a guitar, that hendrix hasn't done? the only way to move forward is to get increasingly into technology. there are people like squarepusher melding studio technology with live music, and i find that quite interesting..... chris clark does a lot of things merging "real" sounds with electronic ones (e.g. he plays his drums on a real drum kit, then processes them so they sound like chunky sampled breaks) and that's neat too.

i'd say studio wonks "play" their studio all day. the studio is the instrument. but the studio is not a "live" instrument like a guitar. proper tracks wind up taking hours of work/minute, and it's so informationally dense that it's impossible to reproduce live!!! when studio musicians go live, pretty much no one starts with "empty" equipment. they rely on samples they spent hours chopping, sequences they spent hours writing, and manipulate those pieces on a macroscopic level. or just cheat and use a minidisc hidden under the table.

i guess you could compare this to writing a song on guitar, but there's still no way to walk up on stage with a "studio" strapped around you and play the song from nothing. unless you're this guy i guess

and you still need to a) bring a load of expensive crap b) spend hours carefully setting it up beforehand

so in short: studio music is the future, but you won't really be set up to play bars 'n' weddings. you won't be able to take requests. and you can't do ~guitar face~ without seeming a bit daft

really? read Nym's first post again:
Nym wrote:as if that was something you "just" do with no preparation or training

no mention of studying music theory...

the fact is, Hendrix prepared and trained, for years. Learning doesn't mean studying classical music in an academy in France, but it does mean you shouldn't expect to pick up a guitar and be Hendrix tomorrow, even Hendrix didn't do that

times change us older cats may want the youngsters to go thru all thr trials we went thru but its different era there is no need to save up and buy equipment cos u can download an app and some sound packs and be up and running.

dudes wanna just make something they can feel and why should they delay? if the out come is good they should go right ahead but if they making some wack shit they need to put more time in.

but some peeps will start making beats and within 1 month they better then cats that been doing it for 10 years of hard practice.

so hard work aint the be all and end all some peeps are naturally musically gifted then others
