Round robin pad cycle onthe 4k??

That's cool, maybe that's the closest we can get to it?

Result.

1. Use the mod matrix to assign EXT 1-8* (Q-Link) to Zone Select. This will let you use the q-link slider to select between four zones/samples per pad albeit manually. The Q-Link sequence function can be used to record your movements and improve their timing.

*EXT 1-8 corresponds to the six Q-Link controls and two midi inputs. So an external midi controller can be used to select zones too.

2. Use a footswitch to select the 6 pad banks. This will allow you to cycle through six samples per pad in a fixed manner (bank a, bank b, bank c and so on) rather that four zones. Less flexible than using the mod matrix, but it may be useful in some situations.

3. Switch between the four zones based on velocity used to hit the pads. It's automatic but far less accurate in getting the zone you want to trigger. I'm not sure how many zones can be in a keygroup program but the principle would be the same, but with more creative control than a drum program allows.

Option 1 would be the most creative and simplest way of achieving the round robin effect on the 4000. You could use one q-link slider to select the sample/zone and another slider to change the pitch, filter cutoff, pan, sample start or many other parameters in realtime to create some crazy effects.

I'll try 1&2 tomorrow in the a.m. for sure and post vids if i get em to work, I have a foot switch so that's not a problem, you're correct about the velocity but I already know I couldn't control it enough to trigger properly each time I hit it.

Yeah, i tend to be heavy handed, i've set it to just 2 zones active and split the velocity trigger to half and half
e.g. Kick=Hard Hit Snare= Soft Hit or open and closed hats on 1 pad.

Did that before but it's no round robin, good work Clint. They all sound like mad options.

I couldn't get this to work, and I'm sure its how I'm setting it up. I went to the matrix from clicking (program) then (edit 1) hit (window) and in the program modulation window MOD 1 source is EXT1 (set to 5 for test as well) and destination was zone select. Have four samples set in the pad 1's zone 1-4. In the qlink setup screen I assign to EXT 1 and nothing happens, changed to zone select nothing happens. I feel like a fool cause there is def. something I'm doing wrong here.

I'm not near my machine right now Ark but what you tried is in the reference manual, towards the end where it describes the mod matrix. Maybe I missed something out, but I don't think so.

Can anyone else confirm this function?

It's not working for me either and I followed the instructions in the manual.

I don't have the time or patience to figure out what we're missing here, but theoretically what we are trying to achieve is possible.

Mod source = Ext 1-8
Mod Dest = Zone Select
Note = All
Depth = +100

Im not sure where you'd set the Q-Link to actually switch between the zones either, Itried messing with the Zone Ranges set at 0-31, 32-64, 65-97 and 98-127 without luck.

Strangely, despite removing the default velocity to zone select modulation it still works (velocity switched zones)...

Blue Haze, do you know anything about zone select modulation using Q-Links?

damn.... Well I haven't had the 4k on since I last tried but maybe I'll get lucky and stumble into when I try again.

Next missing step is to go to zones pages. Highlight zone with cursor and hit the window button. Now be sure to change the setting from velocity to realtime. Once you have done that you will be able to control zones via ext and qlink. Also you can use lfo for randomness.

I think it's actually better than round robin as demonstrated by Mike in the 1000 forum.

There are pointers in the newbie bible but the specifics are not there verbatim (word for word).

This is not is the newbie bible or elsewhere on this site to my knowledge.

How to emulate the Round Robin technique on the MPC4000

Load some samples, its easier to demonstrate this technique using a drum kit but anything will do.

1. On the Program>KG MIX>Zone page, Edit should be set to ONE and Monitor set to MULTI. Load up to four samples so that you have one in each zone.

2. Specify the range for each zone, this will correspond to how far you must move the Q-Link slider to switch zones. For this example the range of the zones is 0-31, 32-64, 65-97 and 98-127, dividing the Q-Link slider movement into four roughly equal sized areas. Zone 4 will be at the bottom end of the Q-Link slider, while zone 1 will be at the top.

3. Set Zone X-Fade to REAL TIME and make sure X-Fade curve is set to LINEAR.

4. From the Range, Level or Pan fields press the orange WINDOW button to open the Program Modulation Matrix. Here you will see the active modulation settings for the program you are working on which are loaded with the program. You may choose to delete these, but it may be better to leave them otherwise you'll affect the current sound of your program. We are going to add a mod source and destination here to make this work.

5. Set EXT1 as a Mod Source with Zone Select as the destination. Make sure the selected note corresponds to the pad where you layered the samples. It should do by default.

6. Set depth to +100 and close this window.

7. Press the Q-Link setup button just below the power switch. You should land on the RECEIVE page, if not press F1.

8. In the slider section select the relevant PART or set it to ALL. Set Assign to ZONE SELECT and adjust the range to +000 > +100. Leave the Ctrl and MIDI fields as you found them.

9. Hit the MAIN button to return to the main screen.

10. Test your pad now and it should work with the active zone being selected by the Q-Link slider. The Q-Link ACTIVE button does not need to be on (lit) as this is not strictly speaking a Q-Link function but a modulation effect. Your Q-Link movements and zone selections will be recorded by the sequencerfor instant playback. Do remember that modulation settings are saved within a MULTI, you have been warned!!

All this is very easy to set up once you know the correct settings, but make any mistakes and it will not work!!

This guide should be regarded as the starting point for the Round Robin effect, advanced MPC4000 programmers should go in and tweak certain settings to see what effect they have on the outcome. I won't go any further with this, but the possibilities are endless.
