Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

hey Altopiano, good idea

what do you mean by "copying segments of bars for an entire sequence"

I don't know if that's what I want, i mean, when I do a basic drum track (say, one kick, one snare and one hi hat), I would like to copy only this part to be able to paste it

like, if I want to copy only my drums that are on the A bank, i would like to be able to copy only the A bank and not the C bank, for example, where my melody is...

Hi. How do you mean? To do what?
Thx!

hy mistery,

i was refering to the feature we were discussin before here ... like if ya have ie your bd on track 1, sn on 2, hh on 3, whateva else ... if ya just want to keep a part of your sequence (which is not a ful bar) for buildin up another sequence it would be great to be able to just copy half or a quarter of a bar for the entire sequence easily and without workarounding (now ya have to change time sig to do that). hope i was clearer this time ...

ikke ... i think mecanoiz was refering to this ...

If we move a note wich is off grid (meaning somewhere on the 960 ticks), we are not moving the note!! We move the 'tick' (place) our cursor is on!

... shift + > (i m not sure though - but try) ... brings you to your off hit very quickly. enter step edit, hit the pad / note you wanna move, ... i m not in front of my 4k now, but i guess it should be locate + > or <. it brings you quickly to the off note event ... not sure now but one of the 2 brings you there quickly and ya don't have to turn the bloody jog for half an hour

in general: hit the pad where your to move, edit, copy note is on and use those <,>, >>,<< alone and combined with locate (or shift .... dunno but i m quit sure its locate) ... you'll see they're great to locate events ... much quicker than the jog wheel ...

thx Alto. Great tip! :o

it be nice to be able to just "grab" note/notes and move them by holding down shift and using the cursor dunno if thats what someone was trying to say.. beats the copy and paste anyway..

and I wouldn't mind a pattern list window wheres one can quickly view all patterns in memory and their data tempo/lenght/number of tracks ect ect in one window,.. nathing of a neccesity but it be nice;)

I dont have time to read all this(class in 20 mins still not dressed) but Alto these are great suggestions, good job

In addition to some of the above, I would just like the simple ability to nudge notes dependant upon what quantize grid Im on

Yes! being able to nudge notes via the quantize value would help immensely...

glide and wax

i think you refer to the same feature, right? again - sorry but my english rally sukks badly  neither get nudge nor grab - feature sounds dope but i ain't sure whether i got what you mean - as i understand you wanna pick up midievents whilst sequencer is running and shift it to somewhere - correct? if not could you please explain a lil bit better what you mean? thanx

Yeah, it seems we're all referring to the same feature... Basically, it would mean you could select one note or several notes (assumedly in SEQ EDIT), and instead of moving them with the "MOVE" function by a specific amount, you could just hit + or - and move them forward or backward by whichever amount the current TC value is set to...For instance, if it was set to 1/32, pressing + would move it forward 1/32, pressing - would move it backwards 1/32, etc....Ideally, you could do it while the sequence was running, but it's mostly an editing feature....
make sense?

I brought this back for the newbies and maybe Sean and Akai is watching with some of these ideas to be impliemented in the coming O.S. :D

Even though I use 8 out light-pipe, it still takes a lot of time for me to dump tracks into Pro Tools. What if there was a function that would 'render' each track in a sequence or song to its own wave, aiff or sdII file. This way instead of having to dump each trach individualy, you just hit a button, come back in a few minutes, and there you have all of your rendered tracks saved neatly in a folder. You then could transfer that folder using AkSys to your mac or pc and import the wave files directly into your DAW.
No more real-time dumping, muting tracks, assigning outputs and what-not.

Yep.. I second the above dream. Even if the MPC had to pause for a second to calculate the start of the bars/end of the bars (the start/end of rendering) this would not matter. We could be out the studio making a cup of tea and chilling (resting the ears) whilst this happens before mixing. Then its just grab eg:5-13 waves/aiff/sdII's through AkSys (make sure the DAW is at the same BPM) and...voila! Hit the spacebar on the computer and were away. No more chopping and messing. THIS is how now and easily, the MPC can become a Hard disk recorder.

I havent really seen this one pop up but have found that I need an SPL Transient Designer to go with the akai as the envelopes arn't tight enough for my productions. This is cool, but could of done without this extra outlay..
Now... can we go all out please and enable the envelopes on the 4K to be able to go convex/concave. This for me is control, and an incredible one at that. Is this possible?
cheers

The Amp Env Attack field is a possible target in the Modulation window, so maybe you could try to modulate it with a synced LFO, or with the Aux env. No idea if this works, but you could give it a shot.

-Unfortunately the above does not work but kind of does it! although the synched LFO does modulate the Amp Env Attack, the sound still drifts as if the LFO isnt properly synched. Obviously a number of sounds can be recorded and then the best one can be picked for use (a silly/time-consuming workaround) but I feel that this should not be the case and the MPC should be tighter (especially when using a synched LFO). Can akai look into this?.cheers
