thx wrote:i think that music genres are very different from each other:
hip hop music got an obsession for execution techniques (IE: scratch techniques, live sample chopping, rapping in freestyle, etc etc)
punk rock is more a matter of raw expression and the technical aspect is not the most important
Johnny Thunders wasn't able to sing on tune, but he was one of the most respected guitarists and singers in the punk scene
band members of Crass (UK anarchopunk band 1977-1984) don't even considered themselves musicians
sorry for my bad english

see i think the line is blurred as well. some of the most influential people in music didn't know what they were doing, how about jim morrison? he took drugs and "communicated" with something.. james brown didn't know ANYTHING about music. i just kinda feel like nym is taking an approach like "the jocks are making music now". my point is it's unnecessary to kick up some negativity about how there's a lot of people making music that are complete idiots. did you ever think that the people you're speaking on wouldn't even be making music if it wasn't as accessible as it is now? and why is that a bad thing? at least CRACK isn't super easily accessible to these people, at least becoming an evil corporation isn't the flavor of the week to do.. and these people running around with their foolery. my point is i agree with nym,, and most of what you guys are saying, but it's like... f**k it. do you. don't worry about the next man doing bullshtt because you never know, he could live the music maker's dream and barely know how to use a keyboard. there's a social aspect at work. and if you consider yourself the different kind of artist/musician/person then shouldn't you rest easy knowing YOU can decipher the difference between what YOU deem acceptable and what you think is crap? i mean.. i personally think i make better music than nym... but if i don't meet the qualification for musician or music then f**k music! it's not an exclusive club. a baby can make music. it's a science mixed with mental and physical realms ok, but everyone's on their own SPIRITUAL journey. and people are going to do whatever is called upon them to DO to GET where they wanna GO!
and i agree people are all "producers" now... oh yeah what about george clinton? couldn't play anything for his life, didn't learn a damn thing, except how to have fun. he was a song maker though! hmmmm... anyway
the funny part is, it's a marriage.. some musicians couldn't make it without these people i'm speaking on. it's funny when people can have all the technical, depth, and knowledge to their art mastered, but still not make anything worth LISTENING TO. knowledge vs wisdom.
