No, chopping was the progression to get around recognisable samples and copyright laws. It's just those obvious loops have been raped. A break is a break because that's what it is, that mad point on the song where everything just sits in that groove.

Looping is a lost art. To me finding a great loop that no one else has found is the whole point of digging. 9 imes out of ten a tight loop gives you that sound that you just can't get from choppin. I appreciate not wanting to rape some old records and just steal something that someone else did, but if you have the ear to catch that sample then that is your creative input and it is just as valid as making something from scratch or choppin a sample all to helll. Can I Kick It? is a great track because of it's simplicity. He didn't need to chop it up because the loop was just so perfect. Plus the beat he used is straight up sick and it makes you see Lou Reeds song in a new light. Now evrytime I hear Walk on The Wild Side, I think damn I wish that was the tribe song cause it's so much better than the original in my mind. When I make my music, it's all about the beat that I put under the loop that put s evrything in a new context which is what hip hop is all about. Hell, Jazz is the same way. Do you think Miles invented all the chops he had? No. He used his influences and put them into different contexts, making people see it in a new way, reviving the old while still creating a new means of expression.

loops choped or pots and pans hiphop is something you live rap is something you do.

nothing useful to say except Lou Reed/Velvet Underground has probably been my #1 musical inspiration through my life. possibly the most "real" lyricist ever. genres upon genres never would have came to exist if not for the Velvet Underground. anyway....

taking time to find a good sample to loop is an art. You cannot use any old sample and think it will sound good. Take for example Kanye's beat "Spaceship" sampled from a MArvin Gaye song - Distant Lover. Practically all he has done is speed it up, it is a sick beat, he hasnt done much.... looping is fine if you add your own personal touches, like kanye and his chipmunk vocals.
