File management on the 4000, a question

Yo! I've been using the 4000 a few days now. I'm extremely happy with it so far, it only took about a day to get around most of it. However I have a question which I can't seem to find an answer to in the manual at least..

Is it possible to *move* whole directories (recursively) up in the file structure? I really don't like the way I've organised some of my programs now, but I can't move folders "up" in the file structure with AKsys. And I cannot find a way to do this in the OS either. Can you do it?

As far as I know, you cannot move a folder. Hopefully one day you will be able to, but as of now, the best way to move your files around is to load them into memory, create a new folder in the place you want it, save the files into the new folder from memory, and then delete the old file. Time consuming? Yes. A pain in the @$$? Yes! Archaic? Yes!

one feature I have always wanted to see is better disk managment.

I usally create a new folder in my computer then dump it in there and then carry it all back into aksys. It makes it easier for naming programs, seq. and samples, instead of using the jog wheel. For me it does.

This is def one aspect that the MPC shares from its old school sampler heritage. All this next generation stuff on there, but you still can't rename or move a directory. And you can't reference the actual location of a program....which means you end up with many copies of the same program for each project you are working on, unless you want to go find it manually every time. I deally, you could save to a prj file that would include all your seq/song data and it would save the references to the locations of all the multis and programs you used....oh what am I thinking. Where would I ever get a crazy idea like that.....AKAI.

with all the ram, it is easy, to load a hole folder. Then crete a new one and save memory to new folder.

Yeah, actually I thought the very same thing.. it's just sick that you *can't* save , for instance a multi and having it set up simply by reference to a certain program on a certain location on the hard drive. It should be a possible, at least, to do that by choice.

It wouldn't be hard to accomplish for the programmers, I think. However, this doesn't stop me from totally loving the machine though As long as it has the kind of storage it has, it's not actually a big problem.

It would be awesome to have some kind of program "library" list, into which you could register your programs (if you wanted to). All registered programs would then be given a unique ID or something, it would be a piece of cake for the programmers to just make each multi part point to program ID x or y, as an option to what we have now.

Can you? I don't remember. I'm pretty sure you can do it in ak.sys, but I didn't think you could do it on the MPC itself.

Yup, the manual says you must press the Window key on a folder name in Utitily or Load page. That produces the Folder Info popup, and that's where you can change the folder name.

I got this from the v1.40 addendum, which describes an enhancement of this popup.
