You might just be in the clip/scene mode. If you press the tab button, you will see a more linear, traditional looking screen where you can chop pieces, add fades to them etc...
There's two options in Ableton. Crop, and Consolidate.
Crop will just literally just crop a chunk of your sound to whatever you choose, but it won't apply any of the fades or pitch changes. It will literally just render it to the size you want it. Consolidate will do that AND it will also include any pitch changes, and fades.
Have a play and you will see what I mean. Hope this answers your question.
That's probably because you've not selected anything. I find it's much easier to select the piece of audio/whatever and then use the right click to access the Crop/Consolidate/Delete etc... options.
If you're on a Mac like me, my suggestion is to turn right-click on in your system options, it will make life easier.
Cheers for the info scooby , I used audacity as the sample editor but its kinda limited, would wavosaur be similar to n mpc cuz thats what Id be familiar with
Stick with Ableton dude, it doesn't have a massive learning curve, you'll be on it in no time. If you keep swapping programs you will never get anything done. I think Ableton is the most similar workflow to an MPC, especially when it comes to seqencing using the Clip and Scenes mode. You can just think of those as very visual Sequences.
What can't you figure out? Tell me specifically and I'll do my best to help you.
you can edit your sample with ableton (right click in the selection and then click "crop sample") or with an audio editor like sound forge or steinberg wavelab or audacity (this is a free software), save the sampe to disc, then open it with live
