Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

jacpot wanted to change the velocity values after he already recorded the track. Using the NV slider is alot quicker than individually stepediting each note. Since all you have to do is move the slider, its alot more efficient than having to press '>' button thousand times and punching in the numbers or going crazy on the data wheel. If you're lazy, you can just edit one bar or less and just cut+paste over the next bars.

Use Note Variation Slider. Select velocity as the variable. Set Minimum value to 117 and the max to 127. Push the after button and overdub the variations in. That way you dont have to try and accuratly hit the 117 mark if it is set to its default settings. If anyone knows how to do it the way my man is talking about with the percentages, I would like to be enlightened... Mattic

prefuse Even though I specifically was asking about the percentage way, no one answered that yet by the way. That was a great tip about using the slider... I didnt know u could use a min and max value thanks a bunch I appreciate it.

welcome to the world of programing. try doing it on older drummachines. at least MPC lets you scroll through only the event you entered: locate <<step>> go to <<bars>> i randomise infinitly until it sounds good but there is method. A good example is the hat before the snare is in most cases higher in velocity. the bigger the range you can use in all events correctly is obviously the better producer. i would choose step edit in favor of note variation slider. Time must be well spent. much time must be spent in order to achieve accurate drums: the objective is to have natural sounding human... like a real drummer but always a certain BPM/precision so it can be spun by DJ's, or with electronic as aposed to organic drum sounds, or compicated/reverse/fast/impossible for a real drummer to play. Right. spend mad time on that ish thats how ill beats become reality.

Listen man I know all these tips alread that yall are giving but thanks anyway for the input :D The point of this thread was to explain how to do it the way I described with the percentages. I know how to use the step edit. I know how to use 16 levels. I know how to turn full level off. I know that I could use one hat on two pads with different velocities. Heres the article from mpc200xl.com so yall know what im talking about.



Exaggerating/minimizing variations in velocity

You can exaggerate or minimize changes in note velocity already recorded on the MPC. If you go to the VELOCITY on the Main Screen and Open Open Window, you get a velocity editing screen. You several options on how to change velocity, but one that is of interest here is MULT VAL%.

To exaggerate velocity differences, you set the Amount to a value over 100%. Of you have velocity values near 127 (the max) you may have to first subtract a value from all the notes before multiplying. The actual difference in velocity will only the increased by the amount you multiplying by:

One note vel: 50

Second note vel: 60

Difference in vel = 10

Multiply by 150%

New One note vel: 75

New Second note vel: 90

New difference = 10 X 150% = 15



This is what I am trying to do but it just dont work. I was just curious to find out if anybody uses this specific technic. I wanna learn everything on my mpc. But thanks for all the feedback it is realy appreciated.

If you read what you posted carefully......this will only work if your highest velocity note is significantly lower than 127 (max.)
Cuz, all this does function does is take your higher velocity and make it higher, and your lower velocity lower. (It's just expanding the dynamic range of what is already there.)

So, if your high velocity hat is already at 127, there's no room to make it higher since it's already at the max.

Plus, you have to START OUT with your hats at two different velocities already BEFORE you apply this^^technique.
So you will already have had to use one of the other methods (16 levels, turn off full level, step edit, etc.)

It's never a waste of time to get deeper into the GUI. From reading this thread it seems like no one knew about that percentage trick... I know I sure didn't.

Exaggerating / minimizing variations in velocity

I know I'm bumping really old post, but this post got me my attention.
I often wanted to minimize the velocity variations in a track then I am working in XL. I went a bit further and formulated the way to do it.

Before applying this method, I recommend to make a copy of the sequence ("Undo" button would not work, as this is a two step process.)

Minimize (compress) variations in velocity
Let's say you want to minimize the variations to 10% (meaning, if difference of lowest and highest is 100, and you want to the difference to be 10), and say you have velocity variations of:

A = 27, B = 77, C = 127
(difference bet. A & B is 50, difference bet. B & C is 50, difference bet. A & C is 100)

Step 1:
multiply by 10%:
Mode: MULT VAL%
Value: 10

Now the values are:
A = 2, B = 7, C = 12 (or something similar, I don't have XL with me right now)
(difference bet. A & B is 5, difference bet. B & C is 5, difference bet. A & C is 10)

At this point, velocity variation is minimized to 10 percent, but now overall velocity is too low.
The second step will correct the problem.

Step 2:
Add 90% (100% - 10% = 90%) of the value of 127 --> 127 x 0.9 = 114.3 (I'll use 114)
Mode: ADD VAL%
Value: 114

Now the values are:
A = 116, B = 121, C = 126
(difference bet. A & B is 5, difference bet. B & C is 5, difference bet. A & C is 10)

As you can see, 10% might be too much (too much compression) for many cases (higher percent would result less aggressive change from the initial values.)

You can use the following values;
Step 1, Step2 (note)
x10%, +114 (Compress 90%)
x20%, +101 (Compress 80%)
x30%, +89 (Compress 70%)
x40%, +76 (Compress 60%)
x50%, +64 (Compress 50%)
x60%, +51 (Compress 40%)
x70%, +38 (Compress 30%)
x80%, +25 (Compress 20%)
x90%, +12 (Compress 10%)


Exaggerate (expand) variations in velocity
This process is a bit more complicated than minimizing.

Let's say you want to exaggerate the variations to 300% (meaning, if difference of lowest and highest is 10, and you want to the difference to be 30), and say you have velocity variations of:

A = 116, B = 121, C = 126
(difference bet. A & B is 5, difference bet. B & C is 5, difference bet. A & C is 10)

You can't just multiply 300%, because 127 is the highest value, so A, B and C will be all 127, which we don't want to happen.

Before applying 300%, we'll "shrink" the velocity.

100% / 300% = 0.333...
We'll shrink it to approximately 33.3...%, so we'll subtract 66.6...% of 127,

127 x (2/3) = 84.6...

which is about 85.

Step 1:
Mode: SUB VAL%
Value: 85
(Note: the lowest velocity must be larger than the value!)

Now the values are:
A = 31, B = 36, C = 41
(difference bet. A & B is 5, difference bet. B & C is 5, difference bet. A & C is 10)

Now you can multiply by 300%:
Step 2:
Mode: MULT VAL%
Value: 300
(Edit: I found out that maximum value you can enter is 200, so you have to enter 150, then 200 instead (because 150% x 200% = 300%))

Now the values are:
A = 93, B = 108, C = 123
(difference bet. A & B is 15, difference bet. B & C is 15, difference bet. A & C is 30)

You can use the following values;
Step 1, Step2 (note)
-25, x125% (expand 25%, the lowest velocity must be 26 or more)
-42, x150% (expand 50%, the lowest velocity must be 43 or more)
-63, x200% (expand 100%, the lowest velocity must be 64 or more)
-85, x150%, then x200% (expand 200%, the lowest velocity must be 86 or more. Since "200" is the maximum value you can enter, so enter x150%, then x200% to make it 300%.)

I have not verified all the values. Please let me know if you find any error(s).

Wrong, velocity CANNOT be selected as variable for NV slider on 2000XL! (I don't know why! It would've been so useful!)
