My first guess is you are not in bank A. An auto-created program like that assigns sounds to bank A, pads 1-16.
The actual steps:
What was the name of your original sound? Let's assume it was 'sound1'.
Go to your main screen.
Look at the bottom of the screen, does it say DRUM1, or DRUM2, or DRUM3, or DRUM4?
Hold shift and hit 6 to go into Program edit.
Choose the same DRUM1-4 that you saw selected on the track.
At the top of the screen, you will see the program name. Scroll through these and make sure it is set to 'sound'...the program you just created with the zone function.
Hit main screen.
Hit bank A button.
Hit pads. It will make sound. If it doesn't, then you need to read back over those steps or read the manual a bit more.
FYI - if you ever think it's actually your pads that are bad, you can check this screen:

Dont know if your talking about the classic or the xl, but zone chopping doesnt automatically assign the samples to pads. You have to assing them yourself. At least that how it works on my 2000 classic.
