Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000
By MPC 4 ME Sat Mar 28, 2009 8:20 pm
:) look man, by the time you have loaded your MPC4000 project, I have my mac booted with Logic an Live three times already ;--) If I use the sleep function, I dont have to do anything except for maybe blow against the mighty mouse. Everything is now booted INSTANTLY (by touching a mouse!)
But I get what youre saying, most computers are slow and not fun to work with.
But for example chopping up longer samples is done a 100 times faster on a computer.

MPC 4 ME wrote:You could always draw regions on the computer and slice it to pieces in the mpc. For longer files I prefer the computer. I hate to use Recycle anyway so I think I don't like auto chop on the mpc either.. but I havent tried it

Here is what you do with longer files:

sample long audio file with your mpc4000
name the audio file
drag the file to your computer with aksys
open file with an audio editor (any audio editor that creates regions instead of just only loop points)
create region markers with your mouse in the audio editor
save the wav file
drag wav file to mpc
open the wav file in the mpc sampler editor
go to slice feature. slice. create new program? yes!
play the new program

dope! Never used software to save region markers, I like it. The 4k will then read those markers and chop/assign accordingly?

NICE lol

I used to chop on the pc and make beats with software
But the way im flipping samples right now on my mp4K, sh!t is crazy...

I feel like u get more creative, more hands-on, more dirty from cutting up samples on the 4K, NEVER had that feeling with software.
I love to get hands-on with that sample and make it work the way i want it instead of pressing [auto chop] buttons :) But when i used a 2K5 i would also use this feature to speeden up the workflow. But i wonder: Why would you wanna do it as quick as possible?
Where's the fun in that? Is it a racing game or whut?
Everybody is using akai's all over the world. So do we all also need to cut like each other? This are just some questions, not to offend anyone out here (i love this forum!)

Thats my experience over the years, but still everybody dowatchalike

I think I'm a little confused (mind you I've had all of 30 some hours with my used 4k+ so far).

So does it or does it not chop samples? Some say yes, some say no? Or am I confusing chopping with slicing? Or slicing vs. autoslicing???

I freakin' bought this thing because I bought maschine first only to find it didn't have time stretch, don't tell me the 4k can't slice now??!! oh brother

Good news for you then! :D

You can slice a sample to regions (yellow button in sample/trim mode). Then using the [edit] function you can assign the regions (or chops if you will) to a program. Assign the program to a part and you're ready to go :P

Hi guys, I'm having some trouble here with the slice sample feature.
When I follow all the steps above:

loading my sample into logic
making regions in it
saving it as a WAVE-file
dragging it to the mpc

when I'm in the region window I can't see my different region I made in Logic, I only see one region. What am I doing wrong. Please help

I am no Logic user but i don't think this will work (but hey, whut do i know?)
The slice function is a software tool to mark samples at certain points which can be read by using the same software.
Because of this i think the markers/slices are not interchangeable.

That true about logic. He will need to use a Audio editor like sound forge, recycle or Bias Peak. Record in the audio marker the parts you want and save or export as regions.

To Tonvie:
To answer your question, YES, the 4k has the abilty to chop samples in the style that I believe you mentioned. Keep in mind you may have to press a few(3 or 4) more buttons. On top of that (correct me if I am wrong anyone...) those chop/slices/regions are split non-destructively! Meaning that you can adjust the start and end points of each one of those peices without screwing too much up.

I finally had the time to figure all this out  yesterday!

Chop shop makes life just a little easier when dealing with slightly off loops...
For example, I would be trying to take 1 long sampled loop that I know is flawlessly looped and try to pitch it up and add drums behind it. BIG MISTAKE! Once I laid down the tempo and tried to add the drums everything sounded off as hell. (Quantize or not)

Solution:
Chop your loop into regions (any multiple of 4 will do, 8/16/32/64) the more the merrier, 16 works just fine for me. Make those 16 chops into a new PROGRAM (Just a few button presses). I then setup my double-time 16 bar sequence and in 'Seq Edit' put those chops in the first beat of each measure/bar one by one. Then I pitch up the entire program to my liking and then press PLAY. The chops play in order but have a small gap between them, right? So adjust the tempo until there are NO GAPS and the sample plays exactly how that one long sample was supposed to play before!
Remember those off ass drums I was talking about earlier??? I use the 'enhanced' resolution to lay my drums with 1/64 quantize ON!!! 1/128 resolution because it's double-time.

The cool part is now I can pitch-up/down and just adjust the tempo and the drums WILL match whatever tempo I like.

ACTIVATE BEAST MODE!!!

Chopping samples and creating beats is often like making love to your wifey.

You can be quick if you want, but where is the fun in that?

Hopefully I want to bump this to show how using Bias Peak to set the regions then chop the file up within the 4k can be more precise and detailed than on just the 4k itself. Regions on the 4k is equally spaced, set by timing of 1/16 and goes up to 32 on a single file through their are work arounds. I'm not much of a supporter of any auto chopper either except for recycle for drums. Not for phrases though.

As the one poster stated you can record the whole song into an audio editor. Go through the file setting up the regions you want without any preconditions as small or as fine as you wish, eq, effect, compress and etc then via aksys or USB to complete the chopping process into programs. Any sampler is only as good as its samples. The 4k ability to read regions from other audio editors is a real plus for the 4k.

I use Sound Forge the EXACT way you just described. When I feel lazy I'll chop and region in SF them import into the 4k/2kxl.
