Dissapointing Digs...

Don't listen for loops, listen for sounds.
If you listen for sounds, I'll bet you will never find anyone that makes a beat that sounds like yours. When you listen for loops, you'll assume another producer heard your beat and stole your idea. "HEEEY!!! I used the same sample!" haha!..nah..he just heard exactly what you heard.
Also, when you listen for loops, you'll be willing to pay $$$ for any record that sounds dope, because you need that particular record to create a beat. When you listen to sounds, you learn how to edit much deeper to make the sound what you need it to be.
Hope that helps. Pick up a few of them records you overlooked. You might use some in the future.

It does happen. That kind of thing happens to me all the time. That's why you have to keep digging. The more you dig, the more likely to have chance to get dope records.

Someone give this man a snickers. You hit the nail right on the head. When you start looking for sounds and piecing those together well then any record is your oyster. Search for a few chords, few horn stabs, vocal snippet, fx, etc... and then make a beat from those. You can find some good ones on any song, let alone an entire record. I've made stuff from al hirt and herb albert, you know why? I just take their instruments, chop those, 16 level them, viola, "milk!" Lol. Also just as someone else said, you never know, what you heard today will definitely be different tomorrow.

I've made cool beats from shit music (check my sig. ). Not sure if I'm ever gonna listen to that record again (Unless maybe to listen for some more dope samples),because the music is actually rather shitty.
Somtimes I buy records just for samples, but then I wouldn't pay much, while If it's a dope record that I'm prolly gonna hear a lot then I'll pay what it takes (what I've got).
The purpose is important!
That way it's actually never dissapointing. Dissapointing would be a whole day of digging and coming home with no records at all...
But that never happend to me..

Today, I went to a store and bought some shit... 6 records. IDK what happened I waited all week to go digging today, was so excited about it and in the end I dug up 5 shit records in 2.5 hours, had a good feeling about them, but when I came back home I listened to it and it was straight bullcrap.

I'm not sure if I can understand this here correct. But anywhere I go digging I can allways listen to ghuit before I buy..

You never dig on fleamarket or thrift stores? Or do you have a portable?

None of the places I dig got a turntable. There was one record shop I used to dig and this was the only place to prelisten but the shop closed

As for me, there is no such thing as a bad dig and I've been doing this for 26 years. You can always get a certain sound from any record. A snare, a drum hit, a horn stab, a symphonic melody, even the snap and pop of an old record on beat... something will stand out for you to sample. You just gotta make time to listen to the whole record.

I never pre-listen. I have a portable but I dont take it with me. Since I only buy $1 records, I can never feel like I got a bad record because its like, "I only wasted a dollar." So I just keep collecting and then listening for sounds like the dude above me said. Also I've listened to something like an mp3 or cd while I'm at work and then came home and tried to mess with the sample and my idea was gone/ it didnt work out well. So I like to make the beat in the moment. Capture the sample right when I get that "ohh shit," moment.

... well... no not really... I know two shops each like half an hour or sumthn away.. both have a TT... so it's cool.. I don't mind spending a tenner or what on a record if it's cool. To me buying records is about quality (in music) not so much the quantity.. of records I have in a f*ckin shelf.. What's the point in havin'hundreds of records and never really wantin to listen to 'em ever again after u've sampled the sh* out of 'em, cuz everything you haven't sampled was cccCrap anyway?!?
Dosn't mean I've never bought a record (or a CD... yes a CD ) I havn't pre listend... But only if they're really cheap as sh** or else I gotta be really sure about it...

blind-folded digging (without listening to the record) sometimes give me great satisfactions
sometimes i buy a record only for the sleeve or for a particular graphic design...
i like digging for sampling and listening but sometimes i found something weird and i can't resist the temptation...
