yea but i got to disagree with lamp a little here ... i dont always chop in silence because its that 'cut' effect in the middle of a sound is sometimes what i'm after.

i pretty much only chop using 16 levels and vel->start now. :!:

Thanks for your enlightening lamp, but what if my basic question was how to trim that particular 2bar loop into quarters, that can be MIDI triggered to fully recreate the basic loop? I just can't believe that's not possible with the mpc! :(

I agree with you on chopping individual horn slices as the first attempt, but i wanted to experiment a bit with it

honestly... I didn't listen to the examples because of needing to download it... etc

however messing with the ADSR, the pitch, time stretching if your model has it, etc.. samples can me meshed smoothly.. hell even using 16 levels velocity on certain segments can help fill the transition areas. It takes practice to learn how to get the sound the way you need it... hell on the 60 you dont even have mute groups or pads muting other pads... you dont even have mono/poly/note off functions... straight up poly and that's it so you gotta either be exact at the chops before sequencing (or you're left with gaps) otherwise you work around it with other features.

it is possible.

you're doing it wrong.

re-read my post.

the fact that you say 'midi triggered' makes me think you are maybe triggering another device? see, i have no idea how you are creating the sequence, amongst many other unknowns.

but the fact is, its totally possible, its easy to do on an mpc, and it works fine.
if its not working for you, you got figure out what you are doing differently.

And I understand that completely, there are no rules and sometimes your vision IS the not so normal or anywhere near normal stuff :D

@ conFuxio, now chopping in quarters I interpret as 4 equal chops. You'd run into the problem I mentioned earlier if the horn sounds are in the middle of an equal chopping point. If you are after what Tapedeck just mentioned then it should work out for you, you just gotta think outside the "box".

conFuxio wrote:I agree with you on chopping individual horn slices as the first attempt, but i wanted to experiment a bit with it

Not all experiments end in success, lol. Your "quarters" don't HAVE to be exact quarter size chops and they don't don't HAVE to be triggered on the exact beat/bar/tick that equal quarters should be on. What you want to accomplish judging from your download I think is very possible. Maybe your just thinking on exact sample size too deeply and not using your ears. You've got to use your ears or you fail miserably, epically.

Thanks for the input! :)

@ Tapedecker

I simply recorded the 2 Barloop by banging the mpc pads while recording a 2 bar seq! No external devices included... Well i check it out in the next few days, always remembering your words ;)

peace

ok then yea it sounds like some padding is added...you should check your start points maybe adjust them a bit.

also double check that tempo is exactly what it should be.

that sequence you sent, i think it would sound ok if you sped it up 1bpm, but i am not sure.

i used to do this ALL the time... find 2 bar loop, adjust start and end points to make perfect loop, then chop to 8 equal pieces... dont change any settings.. record on the quarter notes with quantize on and a close enough bpm and it always sounded fine

hm

Yeah, me too. It just doesn't work with this sample... its focking ridiculous

Either Recycle or the MPC is putting some decay on the end your chops.

Since you want to chop into exactly equal pieces you will encounter situations like this:
Chop 1: Note A + Beginning of Note B
Chop 2: End of Note B + Note C

Note B will sound strange if Chop 1 is in some way altered by decay, because the note will stop playing in the middle for a tiny amount of time.

You can try to find out whats adding decay to your chops and turn it off.
In Recycle try turning off the button that activates the envelope section.
In the MPC assure that every pad has a decay of 0. (The default is 5)
This might not work at all, because as far as i know the MPC always adds a little decay even if you set it to 0. The same might be true with Recycle.

If you don't get it to work that way you need to change your approach:
I personally would've chopped the sample to its 10 individual notes and sequenced them the way i want, with the added flexibility of speeding up the bpm if i want to. If you create one note chops you can use reverb to extend them a bit or add the reversed part of it to the end and fade that out to create a smooth decay. Then you might even be able to slow down the tempo a little bit.

I don't see the purpose of chopping it if you don't want to change anything in the loop. Just leave it as it is and put it in.

If you want to rearrange the chops, you better start chopping by ear, which will usually lead to chops that contain complete notes. Rearranging your current chops would sound horrible because of abruptly starting and stopping notes on every quarter.

ya i chalk this up to exactly what lampdog said

i had the same issue sometimes depending on the sound when i first started using the mpc. even loops that sounded great when i held the pad down in loop mode had a bit of a skip when i would actually sequence them with the exact bpm

its all a matter of adjusting the tempo, tuning, etc.

besides that sometimes chops have a bit of that "build up" from the sound thats in the following chop so you'll get like a click sound at the end of each chop. adjusting the envelope or just taking a bit off the end of the chop fixes this

or you can set the chops to cut each other off if the stutter is heard as a result of the chops overlapping a bit.

its all a matter of playing around with it until it sounds right.

it tends to get easier and more fun when you program based on your ear instead of what the computer is telling you as far as where a chop should start/end or what bpm its playing at.

just listened to your example, and i skimmed through the posts on this, im thinking that you dont want the click on the held out horn sound. im talking about the da-da-da-da-daaaaaa/ da-da-da-da-daaaaaa

both the daaaaa's have a click in them.
id fix this by just making the daaaaa one sample instead of 2 or 3 chops.
