swing

hey guys

just wondering how you guys go about applying swing to your tracks?

do you apply the same % to all of your drums or do you apply differently to say your kicks, hi hats, etc.

what about the rest of your sounds like say you chop a sample to four beats or to 1/8 notes do you apply swing to that?

i usually dont apply much just a little bit goes a long way but up until now i've been applying the same % to all my drums im wondering if theres a difference if you do it individually for each sound or if it sounds more natural or if it has the opposite effect.

also i recently stopped using the mpc in favor of ableton which has an mpc setting for swing. have you guys found that this is identical to the real thing? my ear is not trained enough to notice any difference thus far if their is any.

For me personally it all depends on the Drum pattern and Melody.
I tend not to add swing to my sample's, but thats just me. You could
do it and get a totally different vibe from it. It really depends what your going for.
I tend to either add a lot of swing or no swing at all. Theirs No rule against it. Like I said
it all comes down to how you want it to sound.


As for your Ableton question, I heard its pretty close.

quantize at 1/16 triplets, play naturally

usually what i do is record everything with a certain amount of swing, just to get the beat going along....then once i have some stuff laid down, i'll re-record everything 1-by-1 with swing off.

i hardly ever use 1/8 note anything, its usally either 1/16 with a % or 1/16 triplets. and sometimes 1/32 for drums, if i decide to keep quantize on

Do Not quantize your hi hats, make the snare hit a tiny bit before the 2 and 4 of the 4/4
