Protools is the professional standard. Every top studio in the world is using it. The only program I see now that offers something way different and exciting above and beyond Protools is Ableton Live. If Ableton Live can improve it's time compression/expansion algorithms and evolve into a TDM like product(zero latency monitoring and recording) it will set the new standards for producers. It already beats PT in alot of imaginative areas but unfortunately the format is native and therefore just not professional enough for true head to head competition in regards to recording studio sessions. The good news is that Digidesign recently purchased M audio so maybe some of the ideas from Live will filter into PT at some point. My two cents.
