I chop it up like its going out of style. If you want to make any sort of progressive dance break from a loop sample then yeah it has to be choped IMHO. BUT I do use the loop function for FX, rolls and glitch kinda stuff as well. I purposely sampled classic breaks used by the likes of chemical brothers and chopped it up and re-arranged it into a 16 bar break beat. Using the multi outs as well so certain chops of your loop can be sent to FX or whatever and returned. Ie good old gated reverb on one of the kicks and snares every bar or so. Works a treat, could not believe how close it sounds to classic 90s breakbeat. I mean it is 90s breaKbeat bigbeat stuff, thats exactly how they do it. I played it to a friend who likes breaks and liked it but said it sounded a bit dated...
kinda 90s. I said yeah thats the idea F*$%. I confess to liking that genre and have to not live in the past..Thanks to a MPC1000 with JJOSXL I can drop that sukka anytime live. You never know when you need a kicking retro 90s breakbeat. I mean thats why its called break beat. Its broken beats put back together again different. I do like the repitition, but love the play between repitition and progression, which is beautifully illustrated in alot of the progbreaks that have been comming out. Its a balance and repitition is the root of alot of stuff like trance or triphop

can you give some examples where you think that balance is well met?

My motto for sampling is "if it ain't broken, don't fix it."
