if a midi keyboard says usb...

The Korg Kontrol 37 has USB, but also has a switch to go from USB, standby or DC (which is the power supply)....SO
Im wanting to buy a Proteus 2000 and trigger the sounds from this module and play them using the keys on the Korg Kontrol.

My interface im using right now doesnt have MIDI at all, only 4 channels of audio inputs (Mackie U420). So now i've got 2 problems,,,

1)Where would the Midi cables go to record MIDI data into FruityLoops, so I can move around the pitch

2)The answer to #1 would be to connect USB, but I cant because I've already got my audio interface going.


I DO NOT, want to use the keyboard to play back vst instruments, only to trigger Proteus sounds.


the only thing I can think of is to either buy a whole new interface with midi OR, get a MIDI interface with 2 main inputs and plug the Main outs of my current interface to it and use the new interface as my main soundcard

if you've got two usb devices and one usb port .... you need a usb hub (powered would be best) so you can use both devices at once.

or you could get an interface with audio and midi and scrap the mackie.

or you could use one at a time, but i dont know if you have a setup that would make that doable.

ps. that switch on the back is for power only. all it does is tell the device where to get power from.

well my mackie is a firewire, so a usb hub is no-go.

basically i was wondering if i could just trigger sounds from the Proteus WITHOUT plugging it in via USB and just plug it into the wall for power and not even use the USB. Is this possible, or will it only function with USB plugged in?

and then in the future, could i upgrade to an interface that has audio and midi and connect the keyboard to the audio/midi interface and record midi data to cubase/fruity loops....without connecting it to a USB port?

pretty much can i use the korg control to trigger sounds from the module and just COMPLETELY ignore its USB?

yes, but you will need the power supply in order to power the keyboard's MIDI outs.

also, instead of starting a new thread....can somebody link me to a page or just tell me right quick about installing new ROM....on the vintagesynth.com website, it says It ships with a whopping 32 MB of sample ROM memory which is expandable up to 128 MB using four internal ROM slots!

1) so does this mean the Proteus has 3 extra empty slots, and all i'd have to do install the new chips?

2) if i bought a new sound chip (say the Pure Phatt 32 MB ROM, to access MoPhatt sounds), how would I access the Pure Phatt ROM? would i have to take out the Proteus' original chip? or keep them both in?

Im just getting into modules and stuff, so this is nooby on my end. Im reading up on pages all i can though

you wont be able to play the proteus from the midi data in fruity loops if you dont have it connected to your computer.

you also can't record the midi data in to fruity loops if the keyboard is not connected to the computer.

yes. flip the switch to the correct setting and use a power adapter. plug the midi out of the keyboard to the midi in of the proteus.

yes.

yo DPM... i've got the proteus 2K as well... installing the additional ROMs is as easy as unscrewing the module's top casing and putting the ROM chip in the slot... it's about as easy as installing a RAM chip in an MPC or whatever... and yes, the proteus 2000 has a total of 4 slots for ROMs... it comes with the "composer rom" installed from the factory, leaving you 3 additional slots that you can fill up later... you leave the original rom in and just place the additional roms in the slots next to it. the sounds are then all accessible from the main screen... browsing through the sounds is real easy... you'll get the hang of it immediately. i'd definitely suggest buying the pure phatt rom as probably the more useful of the E-MU ROMs available out there.

also, don't sleep on the proteus 2k's built-in SPDIF output if your MPC and/or interface supports SPDIF...

and tape, dont worry about it bro...i think i finally have it figured out. about the usb and firewire thing you were confused about....i meant the midi keyboard is USB and my mackie interface to connect the audio is firewire....and i was unsure if i would be able to use both at the same time.

thats why i was wondering if i'd be able to use the midi keyboard without USB connected..

yes you can use a firewire device and a usb device at the same time.

i would suggest doing that. that way, you can play the keyboard, trigger the proteus, record the notes, send the midi back out to the proteus, and even play vst instruments.

so thats everything you wanted to do + one thing you dont want to do.

now i just found that the keys on the korg kontrol are "tiny"...like the microkorg i have, and i HATE that....i fingers are to big and i cant play right

so i need to find a compact midi keyboard with regular sized keys, under $170 preferably

i've been looking around, saw a couple but i dont know how big the keys are...

1) Arturia Analog Experience 25-key controller, has MIDI-out, but no MIDI-in

2) Alesis Q25, has MIDI-out, but no MIDI-in


Anyone know the key sizes of either of these.

the axiom 25 may be what you're looking for... the keys are piano sized but not weighted... sounds like it would probably suit your needs though.
